‘Voodoo Money’, what does that mean to the rapper? I am unsure, but it is a damned good track by the promising Germany-based Ghanaian rapper Serious Klein. Blending cadences from a time before his; talking that talk that Hip-Hop/Rap fans love, the eclectic musician brings an energy that is unmatchable amongst most of his peers. From channelling and sampling Alabama’s legendary Rich Boy’s 2007 hit record, ‘Throw Some D’s’ to choosing to go the autobiographical route with his skill set, he spews relatable familial issues.
According to the information submitted with the record, ‘Voodoo Money’ is part two of a trilogy of records that share a title theme that ends with ‘money’. Hence, the consciously-themed ‘Coochie Money’. it narrates “the story of someone who’s moving in the wrong direction – revolving around the ‘things you would do for money without any remorse – being greedy, ignorant and obstinate: getting money by any means necessary’.”
It’s written from the perspective of some of the people that surround me, people I grew up with, and their decisions. Stuff that [really] affected me, Serious Klein shared.
‘Voodoo Money’ is one of sixteen tracks—produced by Rascal—from his forthcoming album entitled, ‘You Should’ve Known’ set to come out on October 19 via Majestic Casual Records. Check out the layered soundscape below.
On a side note: If I had it my way as a booking agent, I would have Serious Klein on a lineup with New Jersey-native rapper MoRuf, North Carolina representer Jon Dacom, Seattle-bred DAVEBYRD, and Detroit-native musician FowL as openers for Kendrick Lamar.
