To prepare fans for the October 26 release of his forthcoming album, ‘Pieces of a Man’, the lyrically inclined Chicago rapper, Mick Jenkins, gifts all with the project’s first single, the ‘Understood’ produced by Katrynada, and its accompanying visual. From recent releases and older ones, fans can attest to the fact that once these two pair up, there is something special in store. Another thing that could be said for sure, is that Mick is responsible with his platform, often presenting work that not only talks to the world about growth, and the importance of things contributing the progression of that growth, but opening up pieces of himself, dissecting and sharing lessons he has learned throughout his life’s journey.
‘Understood’ follows suit, this track itself has Mick looking towards an “old head”, finding comfort in the fact that he understands Mick’s perspective, opening the door for opportunities for shared wisdom and mentorship. The Nick Walker directed visual adds to the message, showing three different levels of mentorship, there are shots of an elderly man with his middle-aged son, an older brother guiding his younger brother, and a young father and his baby. Although at different points in their life, everyone has their own perspective and everyone needs someone to guide them. I’m sure this is a great start to what listeners can expect from off the album, and it’s definitely worth the listen.
