People come across mantras and statements that we cherish all the time. I consider myself blessed because I get to hear it in music often. When I listen to anything, it is instinctual to desire to make a connection. The native New Yorker—old enough to know better yet without a drivers license or a motor vehicle—in me has never driven to find anyone, but I know what it is to be in love. I also know what it is to get business done in the comfort of a cab and write articles like this is one.
It is dark outside. It is seasonably chilly in New York, but the Australian singer sure knows how to make it feel like it is Summertime. As I listened to ‘Somebody Else’ over and over, I thought of being in the arms of a significant other. When you’re in love, it’s a good feeling. An imaginary safety net bestows upon you. Ironically, you are carefree and caring at the same time. If I had to compare it to something tangible, this record smells and feels like a new, warm love. Your loved one just came out of the shower. Then, they put on that lotion (made from husk) and cologne (or sweet fragrance) in anticipation of being in your presence. Wanting to smell and look like a snack should be the standard. You two don’t have the luxury of wasting precious time, so the time you spend together is like lean meat. Magically, twenty minutes feel like a lifetime. It’s why they say: Time flies when you’re having fun. Because any other time, like when you’re at work or in a rush, twenty minutes is nineteen minutes too long.
It is the sort of moments you flashback to as you tell your children and grandchildren about how you met your other half.
