R Kelly investigated after ex-warden’s number discovered

R Kelly is under federal investigation after a retired prison warden’s phone number was found in his notebook at a North Carolina lockup.
The disgraced R&B singer is serving long federal sentences after convictions for racketeering, bribery and child exploitation.
His lawyer, Beau Brindley, says the issue began when Kelly joined a prison mentor programme. The scheme was overseen by the warden at FCI Butner Medium I. Before retirement, the warden reportedly gave his personal mobile number to Kelly so he could help guide other inmates.
Prison officials later found that phone number written in Kelly’s notebook. At the same time, Kelly’s cellmate was caught with a contraband mobile phone.
The discovery triggered a security investigation. Kelly was moved to the Special Housing Unit, also known as solitary confinement. Federal Bureau of Prisons representatives declined to comment on specific security actions or why the investigation was launched.
Kelly’s current incarceration stems from separate federal cases in New York and Chicago. He received a 30-year sentence in the New York racketeering case and additional penalties for producing child pornography and other federal offences.
At present, the probe is ongoing. Kelly remains in the special unit whilst officials determine how the retired warden’s contact details came into his possession. No further charges have been announced.
Updates may follow as authorities complete their inquiry.
