Seven days ago, Pa Salieu, the British-Gambian star with a hard-knock life journey, released the official video for his new single ‘Belly’. In the lyrics of his tune, the crafty songwriter lists the ways a “ghetto man” can do outside of what the world may know him or see him. More particularly, he can have an accountant, leave the bando and stack money in abundance. In the second verse, he raps about the importance of the role of a man (providing for the family) and remembers the cold nights and hard times.

Two years ago, the emphatic songwriter/performer appeared in a Noisey documentary, where he talked about being born in England (Slough), his grandmother’s place burning down and having to move to Gambia for proper care from family whilst his mother worked. From the beginning, the eight-minute video details the near-death shooting and focuses on his head wound via an Instagram post he published after leaving the hospital.

In the post, Pa Salieu typed, “You can’t defeat a man with pure energies” — believing it’s why he is still alive today. Unfortunately, there were nineteen fragments, or shrapnel, removed from his head. It is a wonder he survived, as many victims do not live to tell the story. Also in the special, the ‘My Family’ star talks about growing up in Coventry, England (Hillfields, one of the most deprived areas in the British Midlands, Noisey reported). Ending it off, he talks about the generational trauma of his people, being his ancestor’s tongue, and why he became a star in his own right.

In 2021, Pa Salieu performed ‘Frontline’ for America’s television show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon virtually as we were all in lockdown during the global pandemic due to COVID-19.
