Ryan Coogler makes BAFTA history as first Black winner of Best Original Screenplay

Ryan Coogler has added another landmark achievement to his already stellar career, becoming the first Black person ever to win the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 79th British Academy Film Awards. The accolade, one of the most prestigious in international cinema, was awarded for his 2025 feature film ‘Sinners’.
‘Sinners’, a bold and genre-defying story blending elements of horror and social commentary, dominated this yearâs BAFTA nominations and wins for Black filmmakers. With its richly layered screenplay crafted by Coogler, the film not only earned widespread critical acclaim but also became the most awarded picture by a Black director in BAFTA history. In addition to Cooglerâs screenplay win, the film secured prizes for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Score, underscoring its broad artistic impact.
Taking the stage amid a standing ovation, Coogler expressed his surprise and deep gratitude. According to reports, he described the win as ânerve-wrackingâ and reflected on the support of his creative community and fans that helped shape his journey as a storyteller. His heartfelt acceptance speech emphasised the importance of love and authenticity in writing, urging aspiring writers to let personal experience fuel their art.
The BAFTA victory cements Cooglerâs place at the forefront of contemporary filmmaking and fuels even greater attention ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards. ‘Sinners’ is now poised for a strong showing at the Oscars, where it leads with sixteen nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
