Earlier this week, I had text conversations with my friends about masked musicians. I wanted to know if any crossed over to the mainstream, successfully, without us knowing what they look like without it on. Names like Sia, R Kelly, MF DOOM, HER, and Ghostface Killah were names that my friends mentioned, but the listed contenders didn’t meet the requirements of what I was thinking. However, RMR seems to be the artist I was thinking of, without knowing of his existence. In February upon the release of ‘Rascal’ and its stark visual component, so many people texted me to ask if I saw it or if I knew who he was.
In my recent memory, Tyler, the Creator is the last artist, to evoke such a response with the release of ‘Yonkers’, which now has 123 million views on YouTube. I remember when it had 300 views; I’m sure I have a screenshot somewhere, but let’s get back to the subject at hand. RMR released the official video for ‘DEALER’ almost a month ago, to the date, and it has 2.1 million views and counting.
