Personally Speaking: Nolcha Fashion Week SS 2014

Nolcha Fashion Week, for the first time.

Knowing that we had many events to attend for the day, our Editor and I went shopping! We tried on different outfits we saw fit for the day and night, and rushed home to get some beauty rest. We had a grand time in the fitting rooms, modeling in the mirrors while trying to find the right outfits. On the day of the event, it was 90 degrees, and we knew instantly that “sweat” would be on the agenda. Because of the heat, we decided to avoid the usual subway commute and opted for the Long Island Rail Road, which is a much more comfortable ride. Once we arrived at (Chelsea) Pier 59 Studios, we were treated to a wonderful scenic view. When we entered, we took the elevator up to the second floor and arrived at our destination. Next, we were greeted warmly and assigned seat numbers for the show. Nolcha provided refreshments on site to cool us down from the heat and relax us for the upcoming magic.

Once inside the showroom, the runway was flanked on both sides with rows of black benches with assigned seat numbers. Looming overhead were florescent lights ready to capture all the magic and movement of the designer’s creations. We mingled with the crowd, and moved around the audience until the start of the show. Once the lights were dimmed, we along with the audience took our assigned seats in preparation for the show. On the roster for the 4:30 time slot were designers Maita Marimo, Stacie May, Magdalena Adriane Toth, Bela Criacao, Claire Farewell London, and Tess Johnson.

As the show began, the audience watched in awe as each collection was displayed with a sophistication and elegance that would rival any noted fashion show the world over. Nolcha’s venue, was not only professional, but comfortable and accommodating as well. The overall show was very well put together and presented. Given the setting, we knew these new designers were proud to be showcasing their collections at Nolcha, as the energy and presence of many noted celebrities, creators, and fashionistas contributed to the electric vibe of the event.

As we watched each designer introduce their collections, we took note that all designers in attendance produced styles with quality and attention to detail in mind. The presentations were eye-catching and show-stopping. Among all the wonderful silhouettes and inspirations that were on display at Nolcha, I really loved the Maita Marimo and Bela Criacao collections. Maita Marimo channeled and infused heritage with her classic and sophisticated designs. Marimo’s traditional inspirations along with the tribal music to which her designs were displayed was easily the most memorable collection for me. The beat enchanted the crowd and encompassed the audience with her vision and inspiration of “Tribal Chic” which she later stated in a quick interview for our GrungeCake cameras.

Bela Criacao was another of my favorites as her collection was sleek, sexy, and suited for the modern-woman-ready-to-take-the world by storm! The looks were amazing much like Bela herself as I had the opportunity to speak with her quickly as well. Overall the Nolcha show was amazing and we had a wonderful time covering the event and speaking with the designers afterwards. Nolcha is a venue full of inspiring talent set to make galant splash on the scene!
