Beenie Man rejects Vybz Kartel’s ‘New King’ title, calls for unity in Dancehall

Dancehall veteran Beenie Man has firmly rejected the idea that Vybz Kartel is the “new king” of Dancehall, insisting the crown still belongs to him. The veteran star made the comments in a recent interview with TVJ’s Entertainment Reporter, telling hosts to “stop it” when asked about Kartel’s rising status after his Reggae Sumfest 2025 coronation.
“I don’t know what is a new King from old King. Kartel ah 50 year old, there’s no new King. Stop it”, the 53-year-old deejay declared, emphasising that the title is built by legacy, not handed out by festivals.
Beenie Man said he created the concept of “King of the Dancehall”, pointing to his classic track and decades-long catalogue as proof. He argued that longevity and body of work define status in the genre, not ceremonial titles.
The GRAMMY-winning artist also spoke on broader issues facing Dancehall’s global growth. He lamented internal divisions, saying Jamaicans are often their own worst enemies. “We are the problem”, he said, arguing that unity would strengthen Dancehall’s reach worldwide.
Beenie was clear he’s open to collaborations that uplift the culture but maintains his stance on the crown. His perspective reflects a tension between tradition and evolving leadership in Dancehall—especially as voices like Kartel’s continue to make waves internationally.
As the debate over who holds the throne continues online and in music circles, Beenie Man’s challenge ensures the conversation stays loud and rooted in history.
