  • Nineteen-year-old North Carolina-based rapper YSB Tril shares ‘Do the Most’: Listen

Constructed around your traditional but timeless Trap beat and instrumentals, YSB Tril’s ‘Do the Most’ is an ode to making it on your own and getting it out the mud. The beat may be understated but the artist makes up for it with an undeniably catchy, singsongy hook and fast-paced verses. Tril highlights the hardships of his life, as well as the triumphs yet, keeps the track lighthearted and all-around a fun listen. Tril lets us know that now he’s made it, there’s nothing you can tell him!

  • Atlanta’s improvising duo Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel shares lead single ‘Maelstrom’ from new album ‘Halocline’: Listen

The clean production on this song is top-notch. I really enjoyed the intro of the track. The background synths give a great texture to the sound. It also created a feeling of suspense and tension. The transition the song makes around the two minute and fifty-second mark almost startled me and made me feel quite a few emotions. I really appreciate how they incorporated so many different layers of sound in this song, but successfully, gave each layer a purpose and kept everything crisp. Overall, this song really takes you on a journey, from the beginning and middle you get a sense of falling, but by the end, the music has an uplifting and rising feel.

Editor’s Note: According to the band, ‘Halocline’, the album, comes out May 16. • Premiere: St Panther shares video for the vibrant ‘Infrastructure’ from Insecure: Music From the HBO Original Series

St Panther, an unassuming California-based musician with a strong vocal palette, whether she’s singing or rapping to the warmth of live instrumentation, is straightforward in her songwriting and intent, which is what drew me to her being. In her new song ‘Infrastructure’, she talks about love, looking like a fool, and not getting it right. Not reaching for perfection nor is she selling you traditional polished Pop songs, she is relatable and appears to be someone you could say hello to on the street; she might embrace you. At the attractive space in Los Angeles, Gold-Diggers, she performs the relatable lyrics to her new incredible single ‘Infrastructure’, which has been picking up steam.

The audio for ‘Infrastructure’ originally premiered through the first episode of ‘Insecure’ on Sunday, April 12 on HBO alongside fellow new artists like Cautious Clay’s ‘Reaching’ featuring Alex Isley and Yung Baby Tate’s ‘Never Lonely’ featuring Jozzy. Today, the official music video shot at Gold-Diggers in Los Angeles exclusively releases through GRUNGECAKE.

I had the chance to catch up with St Panther to discuss the release, how she feels about being featured on the soundtrack, her musical skills, the effects of the unprecedented COVID-19, and more.

Photo: Courtesy of Raedio, Atlantic Records, and HBO

GRUNGECAKE: ‘Gold-Diggers’ looks like a pleasant creative space. What is it? How did you get connected?

St Panther: It’s a real unique spot. GD is a bar/venue/hotel/recording studio on Santa Monica Blvd introduced to me through Nice Life/How So Records. First as a venue for a Leon Bridges show, then as a studio for a writing camp. I still leave feeling like I’ve been to more than one place

You are a musician, someone who plays as well as uses their vocals to tell a story. I dreamed of being a drummer in a band as a teenager. When did you learn to play the drums?

Back in 2003, I was nine when I got my first drum kit and did 4 years of private instruction with Matt Westfall, a drummer at Westcoast Drums which was a local percussion store at the time.

Did you grow up listening to an array of music? Mostly Jazz music? If so, where would you say is the starting point for someone who listens to other genres?

I grew up listening to anything from Joao Gilberto, Astrid Gilberto, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince to Ray Charles, Nina Simone to Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé, to OutKast, The Notorious BIG., Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, Theophilus London to Radiohead, No Doubt, Madonna, Altered Images. I named my first dog after ‘Lucky’ by Britney Spears and ‘Supermodel’ by RuPaul is still one of my all-time favorite songs. I think the way into multitude is really just being keen to music as a whole.

What inspired the songwriting for ‘Infrastructure’? How long have you been singing and rapping? When did you know you had the gift?

At the time, I was in a post-Stevie Wonder kick headspace – who always has impressive chord progressions and pop songs with a funk edge – I tried my best hand at that. I’ve been singing since I was little, and rapping was second nature to what I was starting to produce in high school.

Do you produce your records with your band?

I write/produce all of my records at home, this upcoming EP being the first time I take my records beyond that setting and into How So/Nice Life Records to further engineer them with Nate Mercereau/Ricky Reed. I hope to put together a band to tour the music with, but for now, St Panther is just me.

    How has COVID-19 affected you?

COVID-19 has made me that much more mindful with our environment/everyone included. Working as of late has all been virtual and from home. It’s been a productive time despite the changes, but more than anything has been a reminder of how to treat our environment when we get back to it.

How did it feel to have your song played on the premiere episode of the fourth season of Insecure? Are you excited to be featured on the forthcoming soundtrack?

It’s always rewarding to have your work be of use to another artist. When it comes to Issa Rae and Insecure, I think her/her team along with the show and soundtrack give new music a life beyond being released. It finds a life in someone else’s work and it’s genuinely humbling and beyond exciting to be considered as an accessible collaborator in our community and look forward to doing much more.

    [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCRrBXSepj4&h=315]

About the collaboration, Kevin Weaver, Atlantic Records President, West Coast, shared Atlantic Records is excited to partner with Issa Rae, Raedio and HBO to break new ground together by releasing an array of exclusive music each week in connection with this season of Insecure.

He continued, Issa Rae is a cultural icon, a unique tastemaker and a creator of tomorrow’s trends. We believe this series, and this new season of the show, are the perfect vehicle to support her musical vision to curate and A&R music from a diverse arsenal of incredibly special artists that speak so uniquely to the series she has created.

  • Review: LONR self-titled EP ‘Land of Nothing Real’ proves he can do it too

Talented singer-songwriter LONR (stylized as LONR.) already has an impressive resume to boot. He’s GRAMMMY-certified; nominations and wins under his belt, plus he has collaborations with artists such as HER and YBN Cordae. If he were to stop right now, he’d have more accolades and success than many artists behind the scenes! Clearly, for LONR, that’s not enough, and thankfully so. With his latest EP, ‘Land of Nothing Real’, LONR is showing us that not only does he have the chops to contribute to the success of other artists, but he can create his own.

The EP opens up with the song ‘Time’. The mellow track is perfect for an intro and we get a feel-good song for the ladies–instant formula for success! His pen really shines in this song. We know LONR is a talented writer, his awards show that, but this song showcases his ability to be a sincere lyricist while still making a track that is catchy enough for anyone to enjoy.

Continuing through the tracks and no disappointment. LONR has mastered the art of injecting beautifully deep lyrics into a vibey, enjoyable track. ‘Safe Zone’ kept the same energy that I’d been enjoying to that point. The lyrics speak of a girl who lives on the edge and LONR wants her, bad. It’s a mid-tempo track that keeps you in a good mood.

Always one to surprise, however, the next track ‘Lit’ flips the script on all of us. This track is for anyone who may have thought that LONR was ‘one-dimensional’. This song is straight-up fire. Hard-hitting bars, explicit-laced, all that. He enlists 24kGoldn for that track and it comes and injects you with adrenaline. The track that follows, however, ‘Unruly’, brings you back down, gently. His versatility is incredible. Still haven’t been disappointed and I don’t see it happening.

His collar with HER, ‘Make the Most’ is the perfect example of why they continue to collaborate. It’s simply beautiful. “I wanna grow old with you, make the most with you, that’s the goal.” Simple hook. Effective. The vocals are perfect, the production perfect, lyrical content perfect. It’s a gentle love song that has what the R&B purist (me) will enjoy.

This EP is for the person who has heard about the legend of LONR but hasn’t had the chance to fully see what he is capable of. That question is answered here: He is capable of everything.

  • Detroit Alternative R&B singer Kesswa shares ambient track ‘To Find’: Listen

Kesswa’s ‘To Find’ is a dreamy and airy track. The instrumentals are soothing and therapeutic as if the artist intended for it to be some type of healing mantra. Kesswa’s vocals flow over the fast-paced drums; entrancing the listener and setting a relaxing vibe. The lyrics are almost indecipherable with distant chanting and echoed vocals; this all play part in making the song seem that much more magical.

  • Los Angeles-based Indie Electronic singer RYTERBAND shares ‘Brilliant Eyes’: Listen

Such a wholesome and dreamy song. The lyrics really tell a story about how the subject cares for this person and acts as a great framework. The beautiful vocals and ethereal sounds blend beautifully together. The chorus is cute and catchy. Think Odeza meets Rufus Du Sol. The melodic transition on this track cascades beautifully with the vocalist. The last few moments of the song are brought to life by a simple bass undertone and really adds some contrast to the quaint qualities of the song. Overall, I loved the warm fuzzy feeling this track creates and seems like it would be amazingly performed live as well.

  • Hear Turkey-based Drum & Bass producer Psychocharmant’s latest track ‘Sileo’

I love a good dark Electronic track and ‘Sileo’ by Psychocharmant is pushing the envelope of sound in this eclectic Drum and Bass track. The accents of the multiple vocals, adlibs and heavy-breathing edits give this song a Retro-Electro Nu-Wave sound. Drum and Bass can be translated into many different sounds, and this artist creates interesting genre-mixing music that is pure art. The escalation from beginning to end with the into being more on the Electro side, and then switching it up to full Drum and Bass really gave this song a well-rounded appeal.

  • Cinematic composer David the Goliath shares epic wordless composition ‘Dreams Really Do Come True’: Listen

Have you ever watched Titanic or any movie with romance scenes or moments of wonder in a motion picture? ‘Dreams Really Do Come True’ sounds like we’re underwater, discovering a new aquatic species as we watch an investigative journalist on National Geographic. But it doesn’t just fit in that space. It can also pair with a German car commercial or be used for a NASA announcement. Regardless of what the music is used for, outside of mere listening, it is an attractive composition. Listen to the wonderful score from his album ‘Henry’s Great Adventure (Original Trailer Music)’ below. It may help take your mind off of all that’s going on—just for a few minutes.
