  • Kamiyada and Trippythakid release music video for ‘Giddy Up’: Watch

When talking about who the next big artists in rap will be, it is very hard to avoid these two names. Kamiyada is an artist that, in many ways, paved the way for many “underground” artist that has touched the mainstream. Regardless of many artists trying to imitate and replicate Kamiyada’s style, his slightly distorted vocal delivery on top of fast-paced distorted bass-heavy beats has remained authentic. Trippythakid is an artist that has also been a pioneer for the underground/internet music scene with his most popular music video for ‘Leedle Leedle Lee’ sitting at 6.9 million views. Despite the two artists being a part of the same “Midnight Society” collective, we don’t get a lot of collaboration from the two artists. Needless to say. This is an exciting video and song for fans of the two.

Every time I have listened to the track since the release, I have caught myself dancing to the catchy hook and even the verses. This song is fun. Like, start to hit the ‘Dougie’ and ‘Jerk’ type of fun! Listeners are going to want to party with these two guys. The visuals were done by the talented “Midnight Society” music video director, Stevenjets and “Midnight Society” artist, Braxton Knight. When you see the visual, it makes even more sense why all these guys work so well together. They are what the internet needs and wants. It will be no time before people are walking around catching themselves wanting to ‘Dougie’ and yell out “I can F**K YOUR FRIENDS TOO” with Kamiyada and Trippythakid.

  • Brooklyn’s Lono Bristol drops social distancing music video for ‘Stay’: Watch

Hailing from Flatbush, Lono Bristol’s seasoned sound is one that is truly impressive. The musical prodigy is already buzzing in the industry, and his latest release ‘Stay’ shows us why. The beat knocks, the song is catchy, and the video works perfectly with today’s current social climate. Bristol walks us through NYC, solo (social distancing 101), equipped with a fly mask and spitting his fly bars. The New York artist has a sophisticated sound, as though he’s been around for a very long time. That only tells us that he has the capacity for longevity, and we’re eager to see it.

  • Dallas rapper S3nSi Molly, Good Gas, and FKi 1st share ‘Don’t Call Me Boo (Skrrt)’ visual: Watch

I think the different elements and effects of S3nsi Molly’s video are fun, creative, and trendy. Who doesn’t enjoy a convertible, bling, extra-long full sets, baddies, and Scarface and hot pink fire explosions? And of course, you cannot leave out when as a woman, you mind your own business, and a man just has to get in the way, especially at the gas station. I love her black catsuit, and the necklace changes between scenes. Her accomplices in the backseat look what I like to call cute and comfy or cozy chic.

Her parental advisory lyrics and her rasping voice are worthy of both the ‘Freak Bitch Playlist’ and ‘Bad Bitch Playlist’ classification. Check S3nsi Molly video out on YouTube and, more specifically, 1:45 in the video, that scene right there is everything!

    [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO4GzNIi61U&h=315]

Good Gas and FKi 1st, I want to shout-out because I appreciate the speed of the beat meeting the rate of S3nsi Molly rapping. And per usual, I love it when my speakers knock and rattle. I miss being able to go outside to the strip club. I remember the joy of choosing music to get ready before the club. I miss the valet and VIP sections. This song gives you ‘boss’ energy. S3nsi Molly started the video riding around the neighborhood, and then she is making moves with a cute crew. Coming down in her convertible Mercedes Benz, she is giving you that pretty girl attitude to let them know you own it and don’t let them play with you.

If it was 2005, ‘Don’t Call Me Boo, I’m Not Your Baby’ would be my name on MySpace. I would have a black background, with glitter letters that read baby girl and the little Bratz dolls on it. The mouse would have to be a glitter butterfly for sure. But it is not 2005, and what is trending today is Tik-Tok.

  • Romanian vocalist Lidia Buble enlists Jay Malin and Costi for ‘La Luna’: Watch the visual

On May 1, Romanian singer-songwriter Lidia Buble teamed up with Jay Maly and Costi for ‘La Luna’, which features Spanish lyrics. It is her second Spanish-sung record that translates well with the help of Cuban Urban Pop artist Jay Malin and international hitmaker Costi. • 5@5: A morning playlist featuring Izo FitzRoy and Kyyhky

    Luxgaze – Vivaldi’s Fall (Submission)

Last week (May 5), Canadian Nu Jazz/Jazztronica musician Luxgaze shared ‘Vivaldi’s Fall’ with the world. Slightly off-kilter in its production, the song is a “chill, experimental” vibe, that takes you to another plane if you let it. I’m unsure where the destination is, but it does give me the feeling of floating and meditating for the duration of most of the composition. If you need a song to help you transition from that sluggish slumber, give her latest song a try.

    SRCMTRL – Quite Unknown (Submission)

Keeping the tempo and the vibe the same, New York’s Lo-Fi Hip-Hop instrumentalist SRCMTRL isn’t interruptive in our morning efforts. Reminding me of childhood cartoon soundtracks and lazy quarantine mornings, ‘Quite Unknown’ is relaxing in its delivery, and tries to tie in the title with sample audio that features a man talking about a friend who owned a record company. The friend sent a demo of an album he was about to release to him. The sample cuts of there, so it allows the imagination to run wild. Check out the single from his debut album ‘La Vita è Bella’, which is Italian for ‘Life is beautiful’.

Kyyhky – Let Me Be With U (Submission)

Bringing the tempo up a little is a Finnish Lo-Fi Bedroom producer with the lead single from his independently released EP ‘I Feel Lonely Too’. Now, if this music doesn’t resonate with any of you during this lonely, scary and uncertain time, I don’t know what will. One to travel, and seemingly, enjoy life to the fullest, the artist was inspired by “long nights spent walking the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo and the late Summers in the Nordic wilderness.” I want to hear the remainder of the project soon, to hear how Kyyhky (pronounced ‘Coo Coo’) transforms his thoughts and feelings into sound. Hear the self-recorded, self-mixed and self-mastered track below.

Izo FitzRoy – When the Wires Are Down (Kraak & Smaak Remix) (Submission)

Leading us into the morning with more words and fewer thumps, Kraak & Smaak remake the Izo FitzRoy power ballad original ‘When the Wires Are Down’. All parts of the London singer’s song are beautiful, soulful and bluesy production hugging and fitting her raw vocals like a glove. It’s the kind of production you want to see in a live setting, so you make a day out of it, whether you have a date or not. Here’s the Dutch musical duos rendition of the song described as a “downtempo rework that’s perfect for the late hours or the afterparty.”

Certain Self – Temporary featuring Mr Dev of MAURICE (Submission)

Now, that you’re out of bed, let’s walk into the bombastic ‘Temporary’ by primary artist Certain Self featuring a verse by Mr Dev of New York City band, MAURICE. If you ever listened to music by Ninjasonik or even Mindless Self Indulgence, who are fellow New York City blended-genre bands, you may have an appreciation for the Indie Electronic track. From its fun vocal deliveries to the trunk-rattling production, it reminds me of long nights in the Lower East Side on the back blocks of Delancey Street. If you miss being outside, travelling to your favourite dive bars and pizzerias, you’re going to feel this.

  • Spelman College honours graduates with virtual tribute and performance by GRAMMY-nominated duo Chloe x Halle

During a time of year when colleges and universities around the nation are traditionally honouring their graduates, many of the halls that once filled with celebratory families are shuttered as students across the nation shelter in place.

To celebrate the stellar work of the Class of 2020, Spelman College will host virtual events organized to honour its more than 480 graduates.

The weekend of celebrations will kick-off at 6:30 PM Friday, May 15, with a discussion between Spelman Student Government President Nia Page, C’2020, and two-time GRAMMY-nominated recording artists Chloe x Halle on @Spelman_College, the institution’s official Instagram channel. At 7 PM, the event will segue from a conversation to a live performance by the duo in tribute to Spelman students on the @ChloexHalle Instagram platform, where they will perform a set, including new music from their upcoming album.

The virtual celebration will continue on at 1 PM Saturday, May 16, with the Spelman Senior Salute live-streamed on Spelman.edu and the College’s official Facebook page. Filled with tributes and surprises, the live stream is an opportunity for the entire Spelman community to commend the graduates via #SpelmanGrad20 and #SpelmanSeniorSalute.

We are extremely proud of our graduating seniors, who have been undeterred in their pursuit of a Spelman degree,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman. “They step into a world, changing by the month, by the week by the day, armed with skills, experiences and relationships that will serve them well in the days ahead. Already we see them entering top graduate programs, accepting prestigious fellowships, and filling critical roles in corporate and nonprofit organizations. They bring a spirit of innovation and creativity, finely honed critical thinking skills and a grasp of technological skills, all developed during their years at Spelman. The entire Spelman community applauds our outstanding graduates. Class of 2020 you are truly a class of vision.

After receiving their degrees, members of the graduating class have shared their plans, which span the gamut of opportunities. They’ll be working in software engineering and policy at Facebook and Google, in nursing at Kaiser Permanente and in video production at ESPN. Some will teach elementary school through Teach for America, enter management consulting programs at Accenture and Deloitte, and analyze data at JPMorgan Chase & Co, the National Women’s Law Center, PBS and Dell Technologies. Spelman’s newest alumnae will engage in research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, acting and screenwriting, and teaching language at the Council on International Educational Exchange, Inc.

More than 100 graduates plan to enter graduate programs in a variety of disciplines. They will study marriage and family therapy at Mercer University, journalism at Columbia, veterinary medicine at Ohio State and computer engineering at North Carolina A&T. They’ll pursue graduate degrees in environmental science and law at Emory, linguistics at Georgetown, neuroscience at Morehouse School of Medicine and social work at New York University. As well, Spelman graduates are enrolling in programs in pastoral counselling at Harvard, business analytics at Wake Forest, and creative writing, political science and entrepreneurship and innovation at the University of California.

Spelman will celebrate the success of the Class of 2020 at a formal in-person Commencement ceremony, which will be held at a later date.
