When Skrilla isn’t out on the town with his star girlfriend, he releases music. Earlier this week, the Philadelphia rapper released the official video for his song, ‘Mandela’. Over the menacing beat, the songwriter with Mexican and African-American origins raps about changing his environment and loyalty. Throughout his verse, he talks about signing a deal, being stuck on a hill, praying to orishas and sacrifices.
As someone who visits South Africa often, seeing ‘Mandela’ made me open his publicist’s email. It turns out, the ‘Doot Doot’ rapper was in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. That has nothing to do with South Africa or its culture.
On November 1, Skrilla will tour with Chief Keef starting in New York City at The Rooftop at Pier 17. The tour spans Philadelphia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Virginia and Wisconsin. If you’re in the tour’s path and you like his music, consider attending.
