ecently, Kidsmoke, a new Indie-Pop band from across the pond (Wrexham, North Wales), released a pleasant track called, “Seabirds.” Honestly, for today’s online writing standards, I could have just left it there. You know, told you the name of their project and embedded the code, but to what benefit? I won’t do that. I’ll tell what the track makes me feel like when I hear it.

Have you ever gone to a park and just laid in the grass? I don’t mean with your phone buzzing every five minutes. I’m talking about the notifications for most apps are turned off. You don’t have much else happening in your evening because you made sure of it. Dinner is ready. However, you haven’t eaten. The plan wasn’t to fall asleep at the park on the grass. It was for “me” time. If you can relate, we could be friends.

Sonically, because I am of a certain age, most things tend to sound like something I’ve heard in the past. It’s not about a lack of originality. It’s about understanding patterns that work. It is what makes us connect to things outside of ourselves. Based on my experience, I would say that’s why I don’t mind playing “Seabirds” ten times in a row. It makes me want to feel at ease and to be in love. It calls for vulnerability and imperfection. Who knows? It could just be my ears.

Stream Kidsmoke’s fourth single from their EP, Save Your Sorrow, now. The songwriter and bassist recount listening to “a lot of War on Drugs‘ “Lost in the Dream.” He is unsure that it carried into the final version of Seabirds, but it is what inspired him. He wanted the song to have a chorus like Radiohead’s 1996 version of “Lift.”

Want to know a fun fact about the record? “Seabirds” is recently listed by Amazing Radio. It made it into their top 40 charts. It also has a funny lyric video that gives insight into the band’s charismatic cheekiness.

Kidsmoke has four shows coming up in the United Kingdom. Check out their live dates below. If you can make it, let them know that you’ve learned about their show on GRUNGECAKE. Have fun!
