Mass shooting at Buford’s in Austin leaves 3 dead and 14 injured: Texas
A mass shooting at a popular Austin nightlife venue has left three people dead and fourteen others injured, sending shockwaves through the Texas capital. The incident unfolded early Sunday morning at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, located along the city’s busy West 6th Street entertainment district.
According to the Austin Police Department, gunfire erupted just before 2 AM whilst the bar was crowded with weekend patrons. Witnesses described scenes of panic as people ran for cover inside and outside the venue. Within moments, officers responded to multiple emergency calls reporting an active shooter.
Police confirmed that a male suspect opened fire inside the establishment. Officers arrived quickly and confronted the gunman. Shortly after, police shot and killed the suspect at the scene. Authorities stated that the rapid response likely prevented further casualties.
Emergency medical teams transported fourteen injured victims to nearby hospitals. Several individuals remain in critical condition. Officials have not yet released the identities of those killed or injured, as families are still being notified.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson addressed the public during a morning press conference. He commended first responders for their swift action and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. City leaders also pledged full transparency as the investigation moves forward.
At this stage, investigators have not announced a motive. Law enforcement officials continue to review surveillance footage, collect evidence and interview witnesses. They are also asking anyone with additional information to contact authorities.
