Dua Saleh, who identifies as “they/them”, created two incredible songs with fellow musician Bon Iver for their recent album. The song that sticks out most today is ‘Flood’. It eases my soul, and I connect to a specific lyric about flashing forward to a different time.
I don’t know why they may have wanted to be elsewhere, but I can share mine. Whenever I need to transport, it is often tied to being unwanted or undervalued wherever I am. When I get to a different place, I recalibrate everything and try my best to stay away from all signs of potential misery. At least it’s what I plan to do this time around.
Dua Saleh had an intriguing childhood. When they were five, they fled from their home country with family because of the Second Sudanese Civil War in the 1990s. They lived in Eritrea, North Dakota, Maine, and Newark, New Jersey, before settling in the Rondo neighbourhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
They were born in Kassala, Sudan, to a family with Tunjur heritage, who are originally from Chad/Darfur. According to Wikipedia, “Saleh was cast in the third season of Netflix’s comedy-drama ‘Sex Education’ as the recurring character Cal. They returned for the fourth season, which was released in 2023.”
