A Mombasa court hands down a historic sentence for the deaths of 191 people.
A Kenyan court sentenced cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison on Friday for the murders of 191 people. The Mombasa High Court delivered the sentence. Of those victims, 190 were children. Reports describe his group as a doomsday and starvation cult. Furthermore, the cult’s death toll reaches beyond this case. Authorities tie more than 400 deaths to the movement.
Mackenzie previously received an 18-month sentence for film violations. At that stage, authorities had not charged him over the mass graves. That changed on Friday.
Meanwhile, the search for answers continues. The court also said several convicts’ children remain missing and presumed dead. Therefore, families still wait for closure.
The sentence marks a significant moment for justice. However, it cannot undo the loss. Above all, the victims and their families deserve remembrance and support. Whilst the court has spoken, the grief endures.
