Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In 1993, Rapper 2Pac released “I Get Around” on his sophomore album “Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.”, a few years after branching off from Digital Underground to pursue a career as a solo artist. “I Get Around”, produced by Shock G. of the Digital Underground, was an early fan-favorite.

This song is a classic because it’s the first popular song to put groupies “on blast” while celebrating male prowess in the music industry, similar to what Chris Brown‘s “Loyal” is doing on the airwaves today. However, if you don’t think this song makes this a bonafide classic, maybe the big-ass cordless phone in Pac’s hand (2:39 mark) will convince you, as he raps the following:

“Conversations on the phone ’til the break of dawn, now we’re all alone why the lights on? Turn ’em off, time to set it off, get ya wet n soft, somethings on ya mind, let it off. You don’t know me, you just met me, you won’t let me, well if I couldn’t have it, silly rabbit why’d you sweat me?”

I love the way she licks her lips, see me jocking
Put a little twist in her hips cause I’m watching
Conversations on the phone til the break of dawn
Now we’re all alone: why the lights on?
Turn them off! Time to set it off, get you wet and soft
Something’s on your mind, let it off

Exactly. The only difference in today’s versions of this song is that the “fronting” is cut to a minimum. If you’re living that life, you already know how it’s going down… and those questions are better left for the birds. All puns intended.
