Last week, I pushed play on The Game’s new album. As I listened to the exceptionally talented rapper speak his complex mind, I realised that he probably hasn’t healed from his past suffering. Whilst the world may have judged his behaviour on the night of the VERZUZ battle with YG, I didn’t. I waited to hear the good news about a possible evolution through his music. It wasn’t there.
“You ever woke up and wish you didn’t? Wish you was dead and still livin’?” were the lines the 46-year-old megastar chose to start one of my favourite tracks with. I didn’t want to believe that’s where he was mentally. To me, as a fan from his Interscope days, it got worse by the second.
“My baby mama trippin’, my mama say she need shit
Do anybody give a fuck about me, shit?
Deep shit and it get deeper
‘Cause my tenth grade teacher told me that I wouldn’t be shit
So I’m sittin’ here rollin’ trees up
Starin’ at the wall with my feet up

And as if it couldn’t get any worse, in comes the chorus:

He should have run away when he was twelve. His sister was selling her body at twelve years old.
What broke my heart further was his second verse:

I asked her why, she said, “I’m doin’ what I gots to do”
Sixth grade and turned into a prostitute
That’s why I beg you niggas, “Please don’t push me”

I knew The Game experienced a lot in his life, including being shot, but I did not understand how much it still impacts him. A large part of me wishes ‘Meet the Parents’ was just a song, but that isn’t who he’s been. He is the songwriter who puts it all out there for the world to view, and oftentimes unapologetically.
This song was a wake-up call and my first time hearing the aftermath of how parents’ decisions could affect their child well into their mid-forties.
