Lizzo breaks down in tears after meeting her musical hero, Lauryn Hill

Lizzo got emotional whilst speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the 2026 BET Awards on June 28, opening up about meeting Lauryn Hill. Hill, 51, received the show’s inaugural Living Legend Icon Award, along with a musical tribute featuring artists like Doechii, SZA, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, and Common. Lizzo herself joined the tribute, performing a cover of Hill’s ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ alongside Rapsody.
Fighting back tears, Lizzo told ET she’d just met her hero and didn’t have the words to describe it, adding that she needed to go wipe her face. She explained her deep connection to Hill’s artistry, describing herself as a “Beyoncé sun, Lauryn Hill moon, Missy Elliott rising.”
Afterward, Lizzo shared a photo with Hill online, revealing the encounter left her even more inspired—Hill had told her to never stop speaking the truth, saying it lit a fire under her and spoke life to her soul.
