A new survey from The Trevor Project has found a troubling link between blocked healthcare access and suicide risk among trans and nonbinary young people. According to the report, young people who wanted hormone therapy but could not access it were nearly twice as likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year compared with those receiving hormones. PinkNews reports that 15% of trans youth denied hormones attempted suicide, compared with 8% of those able to receive care.

The wider survey included more than 16,000 LGBTQ+ young people across the United States. It also found that 40% of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered suicide in the past year.

Meanwhile, 87% of trans and nonbinary youth currently taking hormones said they feared losing access, underscoring how political debates can become deeply personal health crises.
