Moroccan rapper and filmmaker Mehdi El Youbi, also known as Mehdi Black Wind, has been arrested in Casablanca after being questioned by Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police. The politically outspoken artist was detained just days after reportedly being prevented from returning to France, where he has lived since 2017.
Friends, supporters and human rights advocates believe the arrest is linked to Mehdi El Youbi’s politically charged music and social media activity, although authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive. Activists argue the case reflects an escalating campaign against dissenting voices, particularly following the rise of a youth-led protest movement across the country.
Mehdi El Youbi rose to prominence in the early 2010s for his socially conscious lyrics addressing corruption, inequality and political reform. His detention has prompted renewed concerns from rights groups over freedom of expression and artistic independence in Morocco.
