The Hip-Hop legend keeps fighting for artist royalties—and Congress is finally paying attention.
MC Lyte just added another accolade to her legendary career. SoundExchange honoured the Hip-Hop pioneer with its Music Fairness Award, recognising her tireless push for the American Music Fairness Act. This bill would finally force AM/FM radio stations to pay artists performance royalties—something streaming services already do.
The New York City legend didn’t just show up for a photo op. She’s walked the halls of Capitol Hill alongside fellow icons Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels and Melle Mel, lobbying lawmakers directly. She returned again this Summer, still pushing for change.
SoundExchange CEO Michael Huppe praised her for breaking barriers and elevating artists. Lyte’s advocacy stretches back decades, including her work on the 1989 anthem ‘Self Destruction’.
