• Song of the Day: “N.A.S.A.” by The Underachievers

Name: The Underachievers
Representing: Brooklyn, New York
Genre: Hip-Hop
For fans of: Flatbush Zombies, Pro Era, Flying Lotus
Single from: “The Lords of Flatbush” Mixtape
Produced by: Eric Arc Elliot
Song of the Day: January 16, 2014
Label(s): Brainfeeder

I made another song for them smoker dogs so proceed to spark up your shit.

This is the perfect song to light one to. The Underachievers bring that chill-out vibe in N.A.S.A. that makes you relax and think about some heavy occult shit that most people aren’t willing to. The whole mixtape is worth listening to. Nothing but greatness comes from The Underachievers, and that is an honest opinion.

Not only does the beat and sample go well with each other, but the lyrics are on point as well. It is always refreshing to listen to Rap artists who actually talk about things that most mainstream rappers don’t.

Though, “The Lords of Flatbush” is only the group’s second mixtape, both Issa Gold and AK are making their rounds in the New York area and other places. Beast Coast is rising with new talent and this group is totally apart of the revolution. Stay Gold.

• Song of the Day: “Blessed” by Doley Bernays

Name: Doley Bernays
Representing: Bronx, New York
Genre: Rap
For fans of: Pusha T, Euro League, Denzil Porter
Single from: “Just In Case” EP
Produced by: MP Williams
Song of the Day: January 14, 2014
Label(s): ReeLife

Doley Bernays

At first, it was difficult to pick between “Blessed” and the first song on Doley Bernay’s project titled Just In Case but after listening to both tracks repeatedly, the reasons below helped me choose “Blessed.”

I have to admit: There’s something a little more special about this bouncy, high energy cut. Though I enjoy the switch in production that happens in “Just In Case ReeLife Sound” featuring Chromatics at 1:13, “Blessed” begins and stays consistent in tempo. Its lyrics were written to perfectly match the rhythm and Bernays authenticated his gangsta rap attitude with referencing his hardcore rap influences where he mentions having “a new Pac flow…”

Above all, I believe the most attractive and ear-catching moments for me were when the use of the word “cunning” occurred — I can’t remember the last time I heard that word in any song — But it doesn’t stop there, Bernays displays his feelings too:

“Bitch I called your ass cause I missed you.”

• Sound Searching: AZTECH

Devonshire daughters

About two weeks ago, an odd pair reached out to us for a feature. AZTECH, consisting of Cassie (22) and her sister Shelley (25), are a self-proclaimed “multi genre producing duo” from South West England. Fairly new to the game, they have been producing music for two years [in a small set up] and perfecting their sounds, individually and as a unit.
We didn’t jump to release music until we felt we had the right sound,” said Cassie.
We’re guessing that their latest track “Move” with Californian rapper Mr. Jet Black is an indication of what’s to come from the group’s yet to be titled debut EP, which is set to release early 2014. According to Cassie, it will be a free download available on their website. Last but not least, if you’re wondering where the moniker, AZTECH derives, it is a portmanteau of “aztec” and “tech” for technology.
The “tech” obviously stands for our production which is all tech-based but we liked the “Aztec” aspect as they have such creative and colorful art and one thing we want to put out into the world, with our music, is total creative freedom.
In the interim, listen to the track that motivated us to publish this piece on the former Performance and Media majors turned music goddesses:

• Sound Searching: BANKS

Let the music speak for itself.

Being an avid music enthusiast myself, I have recently been on the hunt to find something that peaks my interest. Listening to the very calculated Dance-Pop hits and Hip-Hop anthems that are currently infiltrating the mainstream media has left me feeling underwhelmed. I want to feel a connection with something rather than listening to a track produced by a highly paid record-company-hired-strategist, also known as a producer, to put together a formula of A + B to equal C.

From the very first time I heard her voice, I knew it was real. All the signs were there. The subtle nodding of my head from side to side, the rhythmic hip-swaying to the beat of the music accompanied by a trickle of goosebumps and my little baby hairs standing straight up on the back of my neck. What I heard was something fresh, different and exciting. I was not just listening to it, but I was experiencing the music. Singer-songwriter BANKS hails from the city of angels, Los Angeles, California. Gaining notoriety for her unique music style, she found herself opening for a lengthy tour with famous R&B crooner The Weeknd. BANKS’ music took many fans by surprise. Her outward appearance made most write her off as “just some pop girl,” but when she takes her smooth and seductive sound to the stage, she wins over the hearts of audiences all over the country.

BANKS' Logo

Listening to BANKS for the first time? Sit back and get ready for a soulful sound mixed with a base of pop-electronic chords laced with a dash of R&B. I would like to think if Sade and Fiona Apple were ever to have a musical offspring; BANKS would be the end product. From opening act to headlining her own tour. Starting next month, BANKS will hit the road on her first headlining tour.

BANKS European Tour

The tickets for her first tour date sold out in a whopping two hours. With thirteen stops all across Europe from London to Paris and everywhere in between. Listening to her voice is more than just hearing someone sing. BANKS’ music pulls you in from every beat dropped to the way her vocals caress the sound, making for an optimal music experience. I look forward to seeing what great things this young lady has in store for us.

• Sound Searching: Adi Ulmansky

Adi Ulmansky's "Shit Just Got Real" mix tape cover

From Tel Aviv with love.

Legend has it: Growing up as a child in Jerusalem, Adi Ulmansky’s music instructor encouraged her to continue on the path of music when telling her she has a rare gift. We’re glad she did.

Reminding us of some of our favourite female artists, Adi blends all sorts of genres together to vividly express herself. In pursuit of it, Ulmansky’s debut mix tape Shit Just Got Real features 9-tracks showcasing her electronic sound, encompassing Hip-Hop, post-dubstep, Pop and Trap. Styled ½ pop star and ½ grunge kid, she pulls her visual and musical inspiration from anime culture, art, the Hip-Hop scene and Japanese fashion.

Influenced by the sounds of electronica in her childhood via her older brother, Ulmansky branded herself as a rock metal kid and she says,

“When I finally heard Radiohead, I felt I’ve finally found what I want to do – a combination of electronic music with the warm sound of live instruments.”

Ulmansky released an album titled “Siblings” with her 3-piece band Lorena B, who performs a mixture of rock and electronic music. The music video for single “Swallow My Gum” was selected for MTV playlisting and was also selected for The BBC Music Video Festival 2011. Lorena B visited London twice over the past two years, in 2011 the band met Jarvis Cocker who then played one of their tracks on his BBC 6 radio show. During the band’s last visit to the UK, in March 2012 to promote a new EP, Lorena B opened a show for Disclosure at XOYO, London (line-up included also Deadboy and Bondax). Ulmansky counts London as one of her favourite places in the world.

Lorena B also performed in the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg 2011, the CMJ Marathon in NYC 2011 and local celebrated festivals in Israel including in-D-negev. During this time, Ulmansky collaborated with Borgore on popular tracks called “Someone Else’s” and “Why Does It Feel”. In 2012, Ulmansky released the first teaser of her solo material; an internet viral to one of her solo tracks “I Always Liked Men With Good Hands”, showcasing her quirky ‘fantasy’ visual style and developed sound.

Today, you can download her debut mix tape Shit Just Got Real. It features a lead track from which A.D.I. is packaged with a retro wedding party concept video, and directed by Vania Heymann. Visuals are a key aspect of her music,

“I think my music and visual style is really inspired by street fashion and anime art. It combines a cynical approach, sophisticated yet trashy. I love the work of the amazing director Kahlil Joseph who released a beautiful video for Flying Lotus a few months ago.”
