  • Hear Buffalo rapper 7xvethegenius’ non-fictitious new album ‘Death of Deuce’

Today, a firm rapper named 7xvethegenius shared a mighty new-age Hip-Hop album called ‘Death of Deuce’, where she divulges information close to her chest like sleeping on the floor (‘A Lesson’ implementing Five Stairsteps’ ‘O-o-h Child’), laying eyes a million dollars before earning hers (‘Triangle’) and questioning how one could buy a house with “street cred” for their mother (‘Graymatter’). For the remainder of the project, she pours her soul as a form of therapy (maybe) — letting her listeners know life hasn’t been peachy for her, the possible reality that she cannot “love right” (‘Dirty Nikes’), and more. Across the album, the Buffalo-bred emcee enlisted Hip-Hop stalwarts like Papoose, gifted Hip-Hop poet Keisha Plum, known for her illustrative dark compositions, talented R&B/Soul singer Raheem DeVaughn, and rising singer Drea D’nur.

If you want my thoughts, I enjoyed the project, especially the song featuring fellow Buffalonian rapper and labelmate Jae Skeese. The five-minute record stories past uncertainty and hefty struggles. From the beginning of the first verse, 7xvethegenius openly wishes slavery wasn’t part of our history, growing up without a father in the household, starting from the bottom, a forty-year prison sentence, and remedying the pain. In the last verse, her co-star explains how he nearly stopped rapping as a teen, the promise of opening for Pusha T, and general shortcomings. Wherever that person is, I hope they have stopped spreading disinformation and filling independent artists with pipe dreams. The music business is hard enough for artists without major cosigns and life-changing financial backing. The last thing we need is groups of people, making it harder for artists to make a living doing what they love.

If you’re missing the kind of Hip-Hop that, once categorised or seen as authentic or closer to the young genre’s original purpose, promotes introspective and relatable stories, it’s here. Indulge, please. It is out now through Conway the Machine’s Drumwork Music Group.

  • Listen to Timaya’s ninth album showcasing warhorse Afro-Fusion chops: ‘Gladiator’

    [media-credit name=”Courtesy” width=900 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Opening his ninth album with a record that could’ve been produced with the likes of American rapper 50 Cent in mind and stored for twenty years, Timaya took the time to sing about how their quality of life has increased and living his life as a “free man” Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former and late President. Coming in at number three is ‘Sweet Us’, Timaya’s largely supported rhythmic single with bright and tropical Afro-Caribbean influence. When I touched down in Lagos, Nigeria, for Christmas in 2022, we listened to the track as we rode through the steamy traffic-prone roads. Following suit with the high-tempo riddims is ‘Compozure’, an Afrobeats song that speaks to the desire to achieve peace (“wanting no commotion”), competition from “other girls” who want what she has (Timaya), and craving love and affection from her partner.

Following suit with the high-tempo riddims is ‘Compozure’, an Afrobeats song that speaks to the desire to achieve peace (“wanting no commotion”), competition from “other girls” who want what she has (Timaya), and craving love and affection from her partner. ‘Treasure’ finds Afrobeats artist Alpha P’s official return to the market, alongside Nigerian music veterans like Olamide and Phyno.

‘Free’ is an Amapiano variant different from most signature Timaya songs. However, if you are from Southern Africa and reading this, you may liken it to the music you’d hear at the News Cafe in the bustling Rosebank, Johannesburg. Immediately after one song that feels out of place from the others, Timaya and Mr Killa’s hardcore Dancehall tune ‘Whinin Criminal’ adds a different vibe.

Next, the seemingly wobbly tracklist resets and realigns into the smoother Afro sounds like on ‘In My Head’ with Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage throughout to the end.

  • Stream Sabrina Carpenter’s eagerly-awaited fifth album ‘Short n’ Sweet’

    [media-credit name=”Instagram” link=”https://www.instagram.com/p/C7wtSb1Reh1/?img_index=1″ width=900 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Today, Sabrina Carpenter shares her eagerly awaited new album, ‘Short n’ Sweet’ out now via Island Records. The album, showcasing her showstopping vocals and sharp songcraft, has been poised as one of the most anticipated albums of 2024 and represents the superstar’s culmination of a historic year. Sabrina Carpenter wrote the album with Amy Allen, Julia Michaels, and Steph Jones, along with John Ryan, Julian Bunetta, and Jack Antonoff, who also produced the album. ‘Short n’ Sweet’ is Sabrina’s most personal album yet penning twelve tracks that are undeniably relatable and honest, crafting a uniquely diverse yet remarkably cohesive work of art.

With two smash hits already off the album, Sabrina notably made history by emerging as “the first female artist to top the Billboard Global 200 and Global Ex-US charts simultaneously with two different songs”, namely ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please Please Please’. Teaming up with GRAMMY-Award-winning collaborators Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen, ‘Please Please Please’ was also her first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Among other firsts, she became “the first artist to earn two #1 entries at Top 40 radio this year” as ‘Espresso’ ruled the format at #1 for three straight weeks. As the third fastest song to hit 1 Billion streams in Spotify history, ‘Espresso’ also marked her second #1 on the Billboard Pop Airplay Chart and received unanimous critical applause. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The New York Times predicted “Espresso” early on as the song of the Summer. Scaling charts worldwide, the Platinum-certified captured the #1 spot on the Spotify Global, US, and UK charts. The single’s success only increased the incredible momentum generated from the platinum hit ‘Feather’, which scored her first #1 at Top 40 Radio.

In the Knited Kingdom, she entered rarified air as “one of the only artists to reach #1 and #2 on the UK chart”, placing her in good company alongside Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Ed Sheeran (whom she solely shares the record for holding the chart for five consecutive weeks). Plus, she has notably logged twelve weeks total #1 on the UK Singles Chart this year. A true cultural icon, she even starred in an official 2024 NBC Olympics commercial.

Next month, Sabrina will embark on the North American leg of her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ tour, which kicks off September 23 in Columbus. The thirty-three-date arena tour sold out shortly after going on sale earlier this Summer and will hit cities across the United States and Canada including New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville, Toronto, Austin, and more. Amaarae, Griff and Declan McKenna will be supporting Sabrina on this tour. Sabrina has partnered with PLUS1 on this tour to launch the Sabrina Carpenter Fund, which will support the well-being of people and animals, including national and local organisations working on mental health issues, animal welfare, and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Australia’s The Kid LAROI has returned with the deluxe version of his first album, ‘The First Time’. The album features fellow musical stars like Lil Yachty, Jung Kook, Central Cee, Future, BabyDrill, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Robert Glasper, and d4vd. • Listen to Nigerian star singer Chike’s latest album ‘Son of Chike’, celebrating Igbo heritage and identity

    [media-credit name=”Photo: Courtesy of the publicist” width=900 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Last month, Chike released an outstanding body of music, ‘Son of Chike’, doubling as an ode to his rich Igbo culture. Outside of the monster hit ‘Egwu’ with over 250 million streams featuring the late MohBad, some other records on the album that I enjoyed are ‘Lifetime Love’ for the lovers, ‘Ego Oyibo’—which uses catchy hypnotic instrumentation and speaks of spending money, and ‘Mma (Beauty)’ about how much he appreciates his lady, her “fair/yellow” looks, and what she means to him. Listen to the English, Nigerian Pidgin, and Igbo sung compositions to explore Chike’s themes, like not having someone you love’s heart on ‘Someone’ and love (‘Your Loss’) with Qing Madi below.

It is a solid project with a groovy and soothing base, ready to entertain anyone at any age.

  • Stream Nigerian music star Yemi Alade’s new album ‘Rebel Queen’

At the end of July, Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade, who famously collaborated with Beyoncé on ‘My Power’ and ‘Don’t Jealous Me’, released a sixteen-track album titled, ‘Rebel Queen’. My top tracks are ‘Big Connection’ due to its authenticity in sound, and ‘Carry Me’ for its smooth and chill Afrobeats production. Stream the release below to hear her explore an array of African genres alongside international vibes. With support from her fellow continental artists like Angelique Kidjo, KiDi, Innoss’B, Femi One, and last but not least, features from Jamaican star and son of the late Reggae music pioneer Bob Marley and Konshens, she continues her uplifting messaging about togetherness, adoration, and fiery passion.

The older crowd of African music lovers will eat this up and leave no crumbs.
