Earlier today (Saturday), South African rapper AKA’s parents—Tony and Lynn Forbes—released an official statement about the loss of their son. In the statement, the bereaved parents confirmed his “untimely and tragic passing” and shared they were waiting for further details from the Durba Police. The couple acknowledged his superfans and asked for their “compassion, space and time” to assemble as a family. In other news reports, it is alleged that his bodyguard was injured and his close friend was also murdered near a restaurant in Durban called Wish.

In 2018 after AKA released ‘Fela In Versace’ from his acclaimed album ‘Touch My Blood’, I wrote about his music video on GRUNGECAKE. Overall, the Cape Town hero collaborated with some of our favourite artists like Burna Boy (‘All Eyes on Me’), Wizkid (‘Roll Up Re-Up’) and Nasty C (‘Lemonds (Lemonade))’.

Our hearts and minds are with AKA’s loved ones and fans. AKA’s forthcoming project, ‘Mass Country’ was scheduled to release on February 24 on Sony Music Entertainment Africa. Before that, he released ‘Prada’ with veteran South African rapper Khuli Chana.
