Grindr agrees to pay £26M settlement over HIV data scandal

Thousands of UK users will finally see compensation after years fighting for privacy justice.

Grindr has agreed to pay a staggering £26 million settlement. The case centres on claims the app shared users’ HIV status with advertising companies. Thousands of UK users brought the lawsuit forward, and justice has finally arrived.

Austen Hays filed the original claim back in 2024, representing 12,000 people. Each person could receive roughly £2,167, assuming the payout gets split evenly.

Grindr insists there is no admission of liability here. Whilst the company disputes the allegations, it acknowledges the distress caused to its UK users. Consequently, the brand has overhauled its entire privacy programme since 2020.

The payments arrive in two instalments—one by year’s end, another by March. Grindr maintains it is now a safe space, committed to transparency and responsible data practices going forward. Trust, however, takes considerably longer to rebuild than money does to pay out.
