  • Editor’s Choice: 3 Best Selections From CAT Footwear’s “Footwear & Firewater” Runway Show

See what’s catching the eyes of our Editor and Stylist from CAT Footwear’s upcoming collections

After catching up with Homeboy Sandman in TriBeCa, grabbing a bite to eat at Whole Foods was next on my to-do list. Soon after chowing down on a delicious breakfast meal, a good friend and wardrobe stylist for GrungeCake picked me up to head to CAT Footwear’s exclusive presentation and runway show hosted at New York City’s oldest whiskey distillery, Kings County Distillery, in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The event was in celebration of the launch of Cat’s Autumn-Winter 2013 collection, and to preview their upcoming Spring-Summer 2014 collection.

Nicole Austin in "Corrine" Oxblood Boot

*Since it’s Autumn, wearing a fitted black braided sweater on slim-fit black denim with gold buttons affixed to the fifth and back pockets would accentuate all gold jewelry and rubies worn on neck, ears and wrists to complement your new oxblood boots. Your fiery crimson colors are sure to be lavishly regaled. Retail price $200

    Tyson in "Alloy" Tan Boot

*Personally, seeing a man dress this with (a) classic Carhatt jeans or (b) a pair in the likeness of OshKosh’s signature stripe jeans which are now discontinued would look great with a white or navy dress shirt. Retail price $130

DJ Gene in "Helena" Camo Boot

*You can wear this with just about anything except camo (that doesn’t match this camo pattern). Retail price $110

At the end of the show, Dani Zizak, CAT Footwear’s Vice President of Global Marketing, got up to say a few words and surprised the crowd by bringing out Tyler Hilton to perform a few songs on the runway, which included “Loaded Gun” and “Kickin’ My Heels.” Afterward, guests returned to the distillery for more drinks and music by DJ Gene, and were sent home with an #Earthmovers gift bag to cap off the evening. We enjoyed every moment. Thank you.

  • Listening Session: Danny Brown at Spotify

Danny Brown is an artist who refuses to be confined by style, diction, impression or precedents.

On Monday night, we went to Danny Brown’s exclusive listening party for his new album ‘Old’ at the new Spotify office in New York City. For about an hour, fellow attendees discoursed with each other about God knows what, chewed on unlimited pizzas, sipped cold brews and awaited the man of the night to appear and that he did. Before he thanked us for coming, in orderly fashion, DJ A-Trak (Danny Brown’s label owner and one of the most influential Canadian DJs in the music business today) spoke highly of his talent, originality and tenacity and emphatically reminded us why we were all gathered in the name of Danny.

[media-credit name=”Spotify link to the ‘Old’ album” link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/old/id705667288″ width=1920 align=”center”]This image is no longer available[/media-credit]

Here Are Some Words from A-Trak about Danny Brown:

“So, we signed Danny [Brown] a little over two years ago and it was a great pleasure to see this project come to completion. His first official commercially released album out next week”, the crowd cheered. A-Trak continued, “Reflecting on how Danny Brown is modest on the whole project—the one thing that really comes to mind for me is—Danny Brown is one of one. There’s no other Danny Brown’s. He can’t be duplicated and be imitated. There’ll only ever be one Danny Brown and how we’ve known since the very first day we met him that he’ll go down to history books as one of Hip-Hop’s most iconic, memorable artists. To us, Danny—even just his voice, his appearance but obviously much more, his whole character… it falls into the lineage of the ODBs, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Eazy-E, even B-Real, dudes like that that you know that in ten years, you’re still going to want to hear their voices.”

“Because there’s only one of them”, he emphatically added. “And that’s why Danny didn’t need to reach or do something or make records like other people’s records sound [or whatever it is] and for us, when we signed him what was important was hopefully to give him that comfort level, that sort of elbow room to just do him and do what he does and what was amazing was to actually see Danny become Danny, in a sense. Because when we signed him, he was just getting rid of the cornrows”, the crowd laughs.

“The first time I actually met him person, he had just cut the side of his hair and he was wearing like a dashiki or something and the next thing you know, he’s wearing skinny white jeans and all this stuff. He became the Danny we know now. We saw that happen. He had just started rapping in that voice and we saw that sort of Frankenstein transformation and we really hoped that the environment that we fostered for him allowed him to become what we saw as potential before we even met him for the first time and it’s incredible to work with an artist that just makes such original and inspired music on their own. He knows what music he wants, he knows — I don’t even know where he finds his beats”,” A-Trak proclaimed.

“It’s incredible. He’ll just send us these batch of songs and they sound like nothing else. He sounds like no one else and it’s also part of the reason why we never felt like we needed to reach or follow a formula, and that’s sort of the last thing I want to say.”

“The first time we met Danny, we saw eye to eye right away with this idea that we let people come to us. We don’t go and chase things. Actually, I remember—to be fair—sending Danny Brown’s music to some journalists who are in attendance today. Some responded faster than others. I knew right away that he was going to be that dude. You know, and some people posted it. We went to Shade45 and they really gave us early looks”, he recalled as he shouted out a DJ on the station.

“Some dudes took a year to come around, but now, I think everyone’s paying attention. The whole rap world is listening to this album right now. This is the album of the year for us, for rap music, for Hip-Hop, and we’re thrilled to stand behind such an original artist: Danny Brown, there’s no one like him and the album’s incredible. It’s a classic. Thank you.”

Every cheered and clapped like we were at a baseball game. ‘Old’ features Purity Ring, ScHoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs on the A side and English MC and producer Scrufizzer, Ab-Soul, A$AP Rocky, ZelooperZ, and Charli XCX on the B side.

Thank you everybody for coming out”, said Danny Brown as he charmed us with his famous laugh. “Well, first off, I would like to say thank you to Fool’s Gold because without these guys I wouldn’t be able to take two years to make an album like this because they understand music and it’s not about money, it’s not about a popularity contest. It’s all about the genre of Hip-Hop music. This music has only existed for not more than 40 years, you know what I’m saying, so it’s still some new shit at the end of the day so we can still be progressive and push shit forward [because at the end of the day] if we let it continue to be what it is right now, it’s gon’ to get stuck, it’s gon’ get real stagnant and it’s really fucking just humbling for me to just see people really accepting somebody like me in this culture, somebody who wanna do what they wanna do and not be caught up because there was a time in my life where I just felt like I had to rap about selling drugs. I had to rap about shooting niggas and all of that bullshit just for my homeboys to listen to that shit, you know what I’m saying? And now, I am at a time in my life where I just rap about what I’ve been through and what I did. So, with this album, it’s just pretty much — I just wanted to let people to know where I came from and where I’m trying to go in the future in my life and I guess that’s Old because at the end of the day, everything becomes old, everything becomes new and that’s life in general, and that’s why I named it that. I guess it’s just a new beginning for me with my old past. So, that’s Old. Thank you guys for coming out and I hope you enjoy the rest of this album.

And that, we did. This album showcases Danny’s past and present styles, satisfying new and old, loyal fans. Great option.

    [spotify id=”spotify:album:5SC0415RIGVX9ZfL0tfbAl” width=”100%” height=”600″ /]

Currently, you can stream Danny Brown’s album on Spotify and preorder it on iTunes. Old will be available in-stores and available on all digital platforms on October 8. Support him. According to Fool’s Gold Records, “yes there will be vinyl too… stay tuned for a deluxe edition of the album on wax later this Fall.”

  • Global Citizen Event Does What Other Festivals Shy Away From

Fight against extreme poverty in the name of music

Usually when asked to retweet anything online by anyone, participation is a rarity. Since Hootsuite entered my life, my online usage has lessened tremendously and I hardly ever get the urge to open any applications on my iPhone. It just so happens, a few days prior, I saw a promotional tweet from YPlan:

    //platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

I wanted to win tickets, so I did.

    — YPlan (@YPlanNYC) September 27, 2013

    //platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Before we knew it, we met Rytis again for tickets to the second annual festival in Central Park’s Great Lawn devoted to eradicating extreme poverty by 2030, women’s equality, global health and more. We didn’t know about it last year, but this year over 60,000 people were in attendance. Amongst the audience were people of all ages and it was clear which age groups specifically came to see Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys, John Mayer and Stevie Wonder. We’re not just pulling this out of our asses, we watched as concertgoers rose to their feet from the thick, cut grass when their favourite performer made it to the stage after a world leader encourage us to take action and sign petitions.

“What better place to do this than New York City?” I thought.

Actresses Katie Holmes and Olivia Wilde came to onstage to present, will.i.am and singers Janelle Monae and Elvis Costello sang a song or two as fillers before the main attractions performed a set. Oddly, Janelle Monae joined Stevie Wonder to sing a class record as he sat to play the piano. We really enjoyed putting faces to all of the people working these organizations, and were constantly in tears when Liberia was mentioned. When Bono introduced President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and she walked onto the stage, I was fine until she started to speak and she reminded of my family. It was then, I cried like a child. A lot of what was said about Liberia via Bono, President Sirleaf, Forbes Magazine Editor Randall Lane, and Dr. Rajiv Shah, made me realize that all of the crisis and issues that my grandparents and parents, and brothers and sisters have faced were all at the hands of the Liberian Civil Wars. It was very emotional.

An older British woman who stood in front of me asked, “You’re from Liberia?”

I nodded in agreement. Then, she rubbed on my shoulder.

Apart from from seeing Mandela’s grandsons speak, seeing President Joyce Banda (Malawi) for the first time, my favorite part of the festival was when the condom owners came out to give their speech. In the midst of them talking about contraception, the importance of women’s equality, and loving each other, people surrounding me were saying the most disrespectful things ever. It was evident that a large percent of the 60,000 people present were just there for the music. People complained as very important people were talking and very important issues. Frankly, it was irritating but it’s why they pulled everyone in with music in the first place. At least, in total, they’ve raised over 1.3 billion dollars since last year.

On Saturday, Terrence Jenkins (E! News) and the Disney Dreamers Academy treated 100 single mothers and their children to an amazing brunch complete with a day at the Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Jenkins was joined by his own mother, Lisa Gonzalez and his co-star Lauren London (Baggage Claim) to also share his memoir, The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom: The Lessons That Made My Life Rich, which is available at bookstores everywhere on October 1st. The memoir chronicles Jenkins’ childhood. In it, he talks about being raised by his strong, single mother Lisa and his rise to success amidst adversity and obstacles.

    terrence-jenkins-mom-disneyland-grungecake-thumbnail

His story serves as a shining example that anything is possible with determination and preparation. It was the lessons he learned from his mother that helped make him a man—lessons about sacrifice, courage, loyalty, dreams and perseverance. Through her words and her actions, Lisa showed Terrence the right path to success. Jenkins offers a positive, powerful message: with a strong family bond, the possibilities are endless.

  • Personally Speaking: Nolcha Fashion Week SS 2014

    bela-criacao-designer-grungecake-thumbnail

Nolcha Fashion Week, for the first time.

Knowing that we had many events to attend for the day, our Editor and I went shopping! We tried on different outfits we saw fit for the day and night, and rushed home to get some beauty rest. We had a grand time in the fitting rooms, modeling in the mirrors while trying to find the right outfits. On the day of the event, it was 90 degrees, and we knew instantly that “sweat” would be on the agenda. Because of the heat, we decided to avoid the usual subway commute and opted for the Long Island Rail Road, which is a much more comfortable ride. Once we arrived at (Chelsea) Pier 59 Studios, we were treated to a wonderful scenic view. When we entered, we took the elevator up to the second floor and arrived at our destination. Next, we were greeted warmly and assigned seat numbers for the show. Nolcha provided refreshments on site to cool us down from the heat and relax us for the upcoming magic.

Once inside the showroom, the runway was flanked on both sides with rows of black benches with assigned seat numbers. Looming overhead were florescent lights ready to capture all the magic and movement of the designer’s creations. We mingled with the crowd, and moved around the audience until the start of the show. Once the lights were dimmed, we along with the audience took our assigned seats in preparation for the show. On the roster for the 4:30 time slot were designers Maita Marimo, Stacie May, Magdalena Adriane Toth, Bela Criacao, Claire Farewell London, and Tess Johnson.

As the show began, the audience watched in awe as each collection was displayed with a sophistication and elegance that would rival any noted fashion show the world over. Nolcha’s venue, was not only professional, but comfortable and accommodating as well. The overall show was very well put together and presented. Given the setting, we knew these new designers were proud to be showcasing their collections at Nolcha, as the energy and presence of many noted celebrities, creators, and fashionistas contributed to the electric vibe of the event.

As we watched each designer introduce their collections, we took note that all designers in attendance produced styles with quality and attention to detail in mind. The presentations were eye-catching and show-stopping. Among all the wonderful silhouettes and inspirations that were on display at Nolcha, I really loved the Maita Marimo and Bela Criacao collections. Maita Marimo channeled and infused heritage with her classic and sophisticated designs. Marimo’s traditional inspirations along with the tribal music to which her designs were displayed was easily the most memorable collection for me. The beat enchanted the crowd and encompassed the audience with her vision and inspiration of “Tribal Chic” which she later stated in a quick interview for our GrungeCake cameras.

Bela Criacao was another of my favorites as her collection was sleek, sexy, and suited for the modern-woman-ready-to-take-the world by storm! The looks were amazing much like Bela herself as I had the opportunity to speak with her quickly as well. Overall the Nolcha show was amazing and we had a wonderful time covering the event and speaking with the designers afterwards. Nolcha is a venue full of inspiring talent set to make galant splash on the scene!
