James Blake would be proud.

The Mississippi rapper and producer Big K.R.I.T. has unmistakably progressed as a lyricist or what I would like to call a storyteller who has blessed the Hip-Hop culture. His latest project, King Remembered In Time,Big K.R.I.T.’s lyrics, as usual, range from intense, bragging-bangers to introspective ballads. In the video R.E.M. directed by Luke Choi from KRSP, he follows K.R.I.T. through the black-and-white cityscape finding a ghostly double of himself that haunts his living counterpart.

The video is an introspective cut that features a sample of James Blake’s, The Wilhelm Scream as he illustrates what R.E.M. (Rapid eye movement) phase is during your sleep when the dreams are occurring. In this detailed video, Big K.R.I.T. creates his life as vivid as possible showcasing it through the video from his thoughts to his pure soul as if he wants to transmit it to each fan out there, an eye-opener. The awakening of the conscious and unconsciousness while in the R.E.M.. The lyrics for this track / video is a story being told through his vision as he says, “Remember me as just a visionary”, he is more than just a rapper selling some sort of fantasy but he will inspire the mind. He goes through a memory lane of what was encountered with the release of his debut album LFU with a major label that according to reviews and fans was the worst release. K.R.I.T. seems to still question himself about that by saying, “Was LFU a dream or a nightmare”, for him it was a part of his masterpiece but the world saw it for what it wasn’t. Yet, in another of his lyrics for this track he says, “One album I’m still kicking Def Jam, tell’em I’m still with it” probably one of my favorite ones because that shows a part of his reassurance within himself.

That as most artists fall off after their first album, he assures Def Jam and his fans that he isn’t slipping. The R.E.M. video comes together with the track itself by becoming one for the world to see the bigger picture. As many artist out there are going for this “flossing” type of images with women, molly, and bling-bling everywhere, yet the route that Big K.R.I.T. opens us is something deeper. To end my thoughts on this track I write a strong-powerful lyric of Big K.R.I.T.,” I don’t know about my dreams cause I’m more spiritual than lyrical, produced my whole album, nothing short of a miracle.” As he is not sure where the rap game will take him but that will not stop him from following his heart and putting his soul into his music. His delivery in every word he spits out embraces his passion of life and the change he would want to see. King Remembered In Time will be an inspiration for many people and inspire them to encounter what lies ahead.
