MTV honours the grunge trio decades after their explosive debut on the VMA stage.
MTV has announced that Grunge icons Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award. The reveal landed on September 9, exactly 34 years since the band’s electrifying VMA debut. Back then, Kurt Cobain teased ‘Rape Me’ before launching into ‘Lithium’, whilst Krist Novoselic famously hurled his bass mid-performance.
Nirvana now joins an elite list of honourees, including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Furthermore, this marks the first time since Kanye West in 2015 that a male act has claimed the prize.
The ceremony airs September 27 on CBS, simulcast on MTV, and streaming on Paramount+. Their fans everywhere can watch the tribute unfold live. Whilst Cobain is no longer with us, his legacy clearly still shapes music culture today.
