  • Michael Jackson reaches 1 billion views on YouTube with iconic video ‘Smooth Criminal’

    Are we surprised?

Michael Jackson, the world’s only King of Pop from the twentieth century, has crossed one billion views on ‘Smooth Criminal’ on YouTube — a digital platform that didn’t exist when he started. According to Chart Data, other music videos with more than one billion views on the website/app are ‘Billie Jean’, ‘They Don’t Care About Us’, ‘Beat It’, and ‘Thriller’. Could you imagine how many views he would have had if YouTube existed back then?

  • Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival shares festival lineup for its tenth edition

Can you believe it has been ten years?!

    [media-credit name=”Instagram” link=”https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Pa81SAmOi/?hl=en&img_index=1″ width=1440 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Channelling the seventy-year-old spirit, I feel Tyler, the Creator dons the musical star, has chosen to reveal his appealing festival lineup with a crossword puzzle design. Starring fellow eclectic artists (Omar Apollo, Daniel Caesar, Sampha) and bands (The Marías, Faye Webster) and superstar disc jockeys/producers alike (KAYTRANADA, Mustard), it is no wonder the Dodger Stadium Grounds event sold out in minutes!

On the high-profile rapper side, fans get to marvel at the assumingly enchanted performances by Playboi Carti, Mustard & Friends, ScHoolboy Q, and Sexyy Red. Therefore, it would be equal amounts of time to rave, show your gun fingers (it’s the American way), do your dance and yell the cartoony lyrics to ‘SkeeYee’! André 3000 will also be there, but he isn’t performing what you may want to hear if you’re hoping to ‘Walk It Out’ like we’re in 2016. Our living legend has been performing his new solo album ‘New Blue Sun’ on stages, baby; you should respect it. When he’s delivering his work, appreciate it for what it is or head to another stage.

In proper Tyler, the Creator fashion, the creative genius and inept businessman planned to debut fresh unheard material from his forthcoming album ‘Chromakopia’, which he announced yesterday. The album releases on October 28. And for the die-hard underground Hip-Hop heads that could defend the likes of a masked villain in the afterlife if they had to, there will be a special never-before-seen tribute performance in honour of the late MF DOOM — called FM MOOD — presented by the late artist’s estate, Metalface Records and Rhymesayers Entertainment. I could cry!

Additionally, Amazon Music plans to return for the second year in a row as the exclusive live-streaming destination for the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. All fans can watch on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch and Prime Video. According to the press release, more details will become available for the livestream nearer the event.

If you plan to be in Los Angeles next month on November 16-17, make it a night with your pals, your bitch, or your throuple.

  • Future’s ‘Mixtape Pluto’ lands at #1 on the Billboard 200

Diamond-certified, three-time GRAMMY Award-winning Hip-Hop luminary Future officially makes history. ‘Mixtape Pluto’, his latest critically-lauded project, officially debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

    [media-credit name=”Instagram” link=”https://www.instagram.com/p/DACDvPZSgb6/?img_index=4″ width=820 align=”center”][/media-credit]

It not only becomes Future’s eleventh number one album, but also marks a rare feat: It is his third new number one album in just six months time, following this spring’s ‘We Don’t Trust You’ and ‘We Still Don’t Trust You’. His trifecta of releases became the first to achieve this milestone this decade, as Future became the first act to achieve this since The Beatles in 1965-1966, and the first Hip-Hop act ever. Most impressively, he is the first solo artist to accomplish this chart feat ever, regardless of genre. Additionally, ‘Mixtape Pluto’ debuts number one across a variety of additional charts, including the Top Streaming Albums, R&B/Hip Hop Overall Consumption as well as #1 on the Rap Overall Consumption chart. Impressively, all seventeen tracks on ‘Mixtape Pluto’ landed this week on the Hot 100, making Future the first and only Hip-Hop artist to debut all songs from an entire project without any features on the chart.

Future’s influence over music and culture has never been more apparent. ‘Mixtape Pluto’ has also earned the icon widespread acclaim. Pitchfork proclaimed it among Future’s “best and strangest,” spotlighting how it is “urgent, kinetic, filled with heartbreaking asides and tiny bursts of melodic ingenuity.” Highlighting his “blockbuster year,” Rolling Stone noted how ‘Mixtape Pluto’ “successfully reminds listeners of the type of innovation and dedication that he’s built a career on.” GQ proclaimed that it is “Future’s third top-shelf project in a less-than-twelve-month period that ranks with the best runs any rapper’s ever been on”—or as Billboard compared, “Mixtape Pluto is seventeen tracks of an artist that has once again entered a zone mere mortals cannot comprehend. This is like Shohei Ohtani going for 50/50, or Steph Curry hitting threes from different zip codes, or Aaron Judge chasing the triple crown. What I’m trying to say is that Future is on his Patrick Mahomes, as I round out these sports references.” Uproxx summed it up succinctly: “Mixtape Future is the best Future, because like the future, the possibilities are endless.”

  • Travis Scott earns #1 spot on Billboard 200 with 10-year-old mixtape ‘Days Before Rodeo’

Officially the higest-selling mixtape in history, ‘Days Before Radio’ is officially Scott’s highest-selling vinyl release of his career, highest-selling in Rap history, and sixth highest across all genres since 1991

    [media-credit name=”Instagram” link=”https://www.instagram.com/p/C_BZuTrPP45/?img_index=1″ width=750 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Celebrated for its transformative impact on Hip-Hop, ‘Days Before Rodeo’ is now the highest-selling Rap album of 2024, and marks Travis Scott’s highest-selling vinyl release of his career, in Rap history, and sixth across all genres since 1991.

‘Days Before Rodeo’ was re-released on all digital streaming platforms for the first time on August 23 to celebrate its tenth anniversary and a decade of groundbreaking influence. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 on September 7 with 361,000 units. In its fourth week of release, the album jumped to #1 after its vinyl editions shipped to customers who had pre-ordered the album before its release, eventually earning 156,000 equivalent album units in the United States week ending September 19 (up 1,295%).

‘Days Before Rodeo’ marks Scott’s fourth consecutive #1 previously topping the charts with ‘Utopia’ (2023), ‘Astroworld’ (2018), and ‘Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight’ (2016).

This seminal project heralded a new era of sonic innovation and played a crucial role in shaping today’s music and culture. Travis originally released ‘Days Before Rodeo’ in 2014 as his second mixtape, almost a full year before his debut album ‘Rodeo’ arrived. Featuring an impressive lineup of guest appearances from Young Thug, Big Sean, The 1975, Rich Homie Quan, Migos, TI, and Peewee Longway, the mixtape introduced a new era of Progressive Trap production that contributed to the genesis of some of today’s most influential artists, including Young Thug, Metro Boomin, and Migos. The project stands as a testament to Scott’s visionary approach, marking a monumental moment in music.

Tracks like ‘Mamacita’ featuring Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, and ‘Don’t Play’ featuring Big Sean and The 1975, underscore the mixtape’s impact, blending moody production with dynamic collaborations that captivated both fans and critics. The gritty production, crafted by Metro Boomin, Lex Luger, FKi, Wondagurl, and Travis Scott himself, set a new tone for Hip-Hop and played a pivotal role in shaping its direction in today’s culture. The re-release of ‘Days Before Rodeo’, offers both longtime fans and new listeners worldwide the chance to experience a project that has profoundly influenced the music industry. Hailed as one of the best mixtapes of the 2010s, ‘Days Before Rodeo’ was instrumental in redefining the sonic landscape of hip-hop, amplifying Travis Scott’s enduring legacy and trailblazing contributions to music.
