  • 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs’ quarterfinals set

The 2024 BAL Playoffs quarterfinal matchups have been set as Tunisia’s US Monastir defeated Angola’s Petro de Luanda 70-67, thanks to Firas Lahyani’s spectacular buzzer-beater from behind-the-arc, and Senegal’s AS Douanes beat Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers 63-57.

[/media-credit] Firas Lahyani #23 of the US Monastir hits the game winning shot during the game against the Petroleos De Luanda during the 2024 Basketball Africa League Playoffs on May 25, 2024 at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda

Lahyani added nine rebounds, George Williams finished with 17 points and Chris Crawford dished out 11 assists for Monastir. It was Monastir’s fourth straight win this season, after they started their Sahara Conference campaign with three consecutive losses earlier this month. They outrebounded Petro 44-39, but ended the game with 15 turnovers and will look to get more organized offensively ahead of their quarterfinal against Rivers Hoopers tomorrow.

Nicholas Faust scored 12 for Petro, Childe Dundao added 11 points and Yannick Moreira finished with nine points and five rebounds, as they look to face AS Douanes tomorrow.

In yesterday’s second game, Abdoulaye Harouna led Douanes with 16 points, with Madut Akec recording 13 points and eight rebounds. Douanes were outrebounded 48-56 by the Hoopers, but were more disciplined with the ball, limiting their turnovers to 10, compared to the Hoopers’ 22.

David Ike led the Hoopers with 11 points, but it was a dreadful night for both teams as they struggled to find the net throughout the night.

The quarterfinals get underway this afternoon, with Al Ahly Ly taking on the defending champion Egypt’s Al Ahly at 2:30 PM CAT, while FUS Rabat will take on Cape Town Tigers at 5:30 PM CAT at BK Arena.

  • Coca-Cola Releases ‘The World Is Ours’ By Aloe Blacc x David Correy For Brand’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Campaign

Aloe Blacc, David Correy And Wisin Perform At The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour By Coca-Cola In Los Angeles

Coca-Cola has joined forces with internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc, to launch ‘The World is Ours’ – a mash up of a newly written and recorded Aloe Blacc song combined with lyrics and sounds from the original version of ‘The World Is Ours’ by David Correy and Monobloco.

The beat for ‘The World is Ours’ by Aloe Blacc x David Correy captures the spirit and excitement of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ and host country, Brazil, while the lyrics express messages of inclusivity, celebration and happiness as told through the Coca-Cola 2014 FIFA World Cup™ campaign, The World’s Cup. ‘The World is Ours’ by Aloe Blacc x David Correy is available on iTunes here and on Spotify here.

Aloe Blacc said, “The passion behind my music comes from a desire to make people dance, smile and sing. I take inspiration from all genres of music and my style is pretty diverse. Working on this anthem has given me the opportunity to fuse the sounds of Brazil with different musical influences. ‘The World is Ours’ captures everything that music should be – inclusive, exciting and uplifting.”

Director of Global Entertainment Marketing at The Coca-Cola Company, Joe Belliotti, said, “’The World is Ours’ started as a Brazilian song with the beats and sounds of Brazil and then travelled around the world where artists and remixers added local languages, sounds and instruments. We were looking for a global artist that would bring another perspective, with integrity and authenticity, and that is exactly what Aloe did. We’re delighted to be partnering with Aloe Blacc to help us bring the story of The World’s Cup to life through music.”

The song has been travelling as part of the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, gathering the vocals of local artists from all around the globe. As the song visited each market, local artists were able to put their own spin on the track, creating duet versions featuring lyrics sung in their native language. With twenty-four local versions, covering over 175 markets, ‘The World is Ours’ is the anthem for the Coca-Cola 2014 FIFA World Cup™ campaign.

On the global collaboration, Belliotti said, “This song has more stamps in its passport than any other song out there. Our ambition for “The World Is Ours” has always been to bring the sounds of Brazil to the world and in return, the sounds of the world back to Brazil. We wanted to capture the spirit of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in this music – this is everyone’s cup, wherever you are, whoever you support.”

‘The World is Ours’ by Aloe Blacc x David Correy is included on “One Love, One Rhythm: The Official 2014 FIFA World Cup™ Album” to be released by Sony Music Entertainment globally on May 13th. Behind the vocals of Brazilian-American artist David Correy, the song was penned by world-class songwriting/producer team Rock Mafia, co-produced by Brazilian-born, legendary collaborator Mario Caldato Jr. and features the rhythmic samba, baile funk and technobgrega beats of Brazilian percussion band Monobloco. This cultural mix captures the inclusive spirit of The World’s Cup campaign.

Correy, the voice behind ‘The World is Ours’, was born into poverty in Recife, Brazil. Adopted at the age of two, Correy discovered a talent for music that has helped him overcome his early challenges. After a difficult start to life, his adoptive parents encouraged his passion for music. Having ventured on a musical journey of his own, Correy has since gained a dedicated fan base with his voice, inspiring story and relentless optimism.

On his partnership with Coca-Cola, Correy said, “Teaming up with Coca-Cola on this inspiring piece of music for the FIFA World Cup™ album is an unbelievable turn of events. My upbringing has brought me so much diversity and music has allowed me to express my challenges and successes in a positive way. Through this incredible journey with Coca-Cola and ‘The World is Ours’, we have shared a message of hope and passion with the world.”

Aloe Blacc and David Correy performed ‘The World is Ours’ by Aloe Blacc x David Correy live for the first time at the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour concert in Los Angeles on April 19th. They were joined on stage by Puerto Rican musician Wisin, who also contributed to the local version of the anthem in Mexico.

Aloe Blacc’s latest album “Lift Your Spirit” is available for purchase on iTunes here featuring his single “The Man”.

On Friday, December 20, the Carmelo Anthony Foundation teamed up with Fox Home Entertainment to host a special screening of Big at the AMC Empire 25 Theater in Times Square. 250 deserving middle school students enjoyed the afternoon with refreshments, red carpet treatment and a movie.

Possibly twice the age of most in attendance, this time A Very Melo Christmas celebrated Big’s 25th Anniversary release. All of the children looked happy and the New York Knicks Kids were exceptionally cute and talented.

We had a minute to talk with Carmelo Anthony about how his foundation selects children, and the feeling that he gets when he sees the children smile:

Esparo Voltaire, Jr. interviewing Carmelo Anthony

We see that giving back is something that you like to do a lot. Specifically, around Thanksgiving you were at The Boys & Girls Club [giving away turkeys and packages], so how are these kids chosen?

It’s different groups that we chose. You know, a lot of the times, we let the kids submit essays and then we’ll read the essays and things like that then, there’s a group that we select from that. Today, we have three different groups, so it’s all across the board. But regardless, I’m just here to have some fun. For me, just to get away from basketball for a day and just removing myself from that and just have fun with it.

What’s the feeling that you get from seeing all of these kids smile?

It’s inspiring to me. It’s motivating to me, to want to keep doing my day job, to the best of my ability. [Because I know it will motivate others.]
