  • Nigeria’s global Afrobeats princess Ayra Starr’s forthcoming album ‘The Year I Turned 21’ to release this Friday

    [media-credit name=”Photos: Courtesy of the label” width=683 align=”center”][/media-credit]

Kicking off what promises to be the beginning of a groundbreaking and remarkable era, GRAMMY Award-nominated global Afrobeats phenomenon Ayra Starr shares the news of the release of her forthcoming second full-length album, ‘The Year I Turned 21’ on May 31, which Mavin Records/Republic Records will release. Recently, she released her new track ‘Bad Vibes’, which finds her firing on all cylinders and has already garnered over ten million streams. A steady Afrobeats groove sets the pace as her smooth vocals coast over the beat. A hypnotic hook takes hold, and Nigerian phenomenon Seyi Vibez pulls up for a head-turning cameo. Together, they tap into undeniable chemistry, delivering a worldwide Afrobeats anthem. Additionally, she collaborated with Rvssian and Rauw Alejandro for their smash global hit ‘Santa’ that has already amassed over twp-hundred million streams worldwide.

She quietly laid the foundation for this chapter with ‘Commas’ earlier this year, which has already exploded with over 100 million streams worldwide. Meanwhile, the song attracted acclaim worldwide. Billboard touted it among “Afrobeats Fresh Picks”, going on to proclaim, “Over a swelling string arrangement and bubbling percussion, she delivers a personal message of resilience for those who need it most – including herself.” OKAYAFRICA applauded how “her sultry vocals and magnetic presence carry the weight of a seasoned professional”, and CLASH attested, “Serving as a reset, her new single ‘Commas’ opens a fresh chapter in her work.” HotNewHipHop put it best, “While her career is still young, she is arguably a ‘Starr’ already.”

Ayra Starr is signed to Nigerian label Mavin Records and her music is distributed by Republic worldwide.

Earlier this year, she received her very first GRAMMY nomination in the category of Best African Music Performance for her global smash ‘Rush’, which topped the UK Afrobeats Chart and became her highest charting single on the UK’s Official Singles Charts, peaking at No. 24, certifying Silver.

It was one of many career milestones she marked in 2023 which include making the BBC’s Sound of 2024 list and being nominated for MOBO Awards’ Best African Music Act for the second time. This year so far, Ayra Starr has been nominated for three BET Awards including Best New Artist, Best International Act and BET Her for ‘Commas’.

Last year also saw Ayra Starr embark on her sold-out, first headline tour—’21: The World Tour’—which spanned North America, Africa, Australia and Europe. The London show earned praise from The Guardian, which stated: “[The] West African star underlines her superstar potential… despite her age, she has a substantial and varied catalogue, allowing multiple energies and vibes to seamlessly coexist here.”

  • Red Lake Nation College opens first-ever tribal college in the United States

[/media-credit] The new Red Lake Nation College site at 900 S 3rd Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota

According to Minnesota Compass, 44.2% of Minnesota’s American Indian population resides in the Twin Cities. Yet until now, there was no tribal college in the Twin Cities that provided culturally based higher education to Native students. Red Lake Nation College (RLNC) is celebrating its grand opening of its Minneapolis site Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 2 PM to 4 PM, with music and social activities from 3 PM to 6 PM at 900 S 3rd Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The event is free and open to the public.

With a new campus located in downtown Minneapolis, RLNC aims to fill a crucial void in higher education by offering an affordable, accredited higher education grounded in Ojibwe language and culture to Native American students in the heart of Minneapolis.

RLNC, an accredited two-year tribal college located on the shores of Red Lake in Northern Minnesota, has delivered courses through distance education to downtown Minneapolis students since 2021. The new site, completed in the spring of 2024, will provide state-of-the-art facilities and education services to support student success.

As a TCU in the Twin Cities, RLNC serves a unique market niche in higher education, focusing on Native communities while welcoming students of all tribal backgrounds through its open-enrollment policy. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and ensures rigorous academic standards and quality education delivery.

“Our grand opening represents a significant step towards providing accessible education to Native American communities living in urban areas”, said Dan King, President of Red Lake Nation College. “By establishing our Minneapolis location, we are pioneering a new era of tribal college presence in major metropolitan centers, offering globally relevant courses steeped in Ojibwe culture to prepare students for success in the modern job market.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the courses of study offered, career opportunities for graduates, and hear from President Dan King, a prominent business leader and a Hereditary Chief of the Red Lake Nation, about his vision for the college and the services it offers.

  • 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs’ quarterfinals set

The 2024 BAL Playoffs quarterfinal matchups have been set as Tunisia’s US Monastir defeated Angola’s Petro de Luanda 70-67, thanks to Firas Lahyani’s spectacular buzzer-beater from behind-the-arc, and Senegal’s AS Douanes beat Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers 63-57.

[/media-credit] Firas Lahyani #23 of the US Monastir hits the game winning shot during the game against the Petroleos De Luanda during the 2024 Basketball Africa League Playoffs on May 25, 2024 at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda

Lahyani added nine rebounds, George Williams finished with 17 points and Chris Crawford dished out 11 assists for Monastir. It was Monastir’s fourth straight win this season, after they started their Sahara Conference campaign with three consecutive losses earlier this month. They outrebounded Petro 44-39, but ended the game with 15 turnovers and will look to get more organized offensively ahead of their quarterfinal against Rivers Hoopers tomorrow.

Nicholas Faust scored 12 for Petro, Childe Dundao added 11 points and Yannick Moreira finished with nine points and five rebounds, as they look to face AS Douanes tomorrow.

In yesterday’s second game, Abdoulaye Harouna led Douanes with 16 points, with Madut Akec recording 13 points and eight rebounds. Douanes were outrebounded 48-56 by the Hoopers, but were more disciplined with the ball, limiting their turnovers to 10, compared to the Hoopers’ 22.

David Ike led the Hoopers with 11 points, but it was a dreadful night for both teams as they struggled to find the net throughout the night.

The quarterfinals get underway this afternoon, with Al Ahly Ly taking on the defending champion Egypt’s Al Ahly at 2:30 PM CAT, while FUS Rabat will take on Cape Town Tigers at 5:30 PM CAT at BK Arena.
