• Model of the Week: Shermon Braithwaite

    Meet Shermon Braithwaite

Shermon Braithwaite is not old enough to get into a happening club in New York City, but he just might win you over with his abs. Cruising the Internet, a New York based brand called President For Life caught my attention with a fine young model in use for what seems to be their first collection. From the information gathered, they are “a premium menswear brand that fuses traditional design and cosmopolitan sensibilities while supporting meaningful trade with Africa.” They are handmade in Accra, Ghana — I was there briefly during a layover to Liberia — by master tailors, and are very unique.

    Shermon Braithwaite

Quite naturally, fashion designers hire models whom they believe will best fit their items and best represent their vision. Subsequently, and needless to carry on, Shermon Braithwaite is certainly that person for this brand. Other than the promotional photography we are so enamored with, there’s not much online about Mr. Braithwaite and we hope that changes sooner than later.

  • Sound Searching: Adi Ulmansky

Adi Ulmansky's "Shit Just Got Real" mix tape cover

    From Tel Aviv with love.

Legend has it: Growing up as a child in Jerusalem, Adi Ulmansky’s music instructor encouraged her to continue on the path of music when telling her she has a rare gift. We’re glad she did.

Reminding us of some of our favourite female artists, Adi blends all sorts of genres together to vividly express herself. In pursuit of it, Ulmansky’s debut mix tape Shit Just Got Real features 9-tracks showcasing her electronic sound, encompassing Hip-Hop, post-dubstep, Pop and Trap. Styled ½ pop star and ½ grunge kid, she pulls her visual and musical inspiration from anime culture, art, the Hip-Hop scene and Japanese fashion.

Influenced by the sounds of electronica in her childhood via her older brother, Ulmansky branded herself as a rock metal kid and she says,

“When I finally heard Radiohead, I felt I’ve finally found what I want to do – a combination of electronic music with the warm sound of live instruments.”

Ulmansky released an album titled “Siblings” with her 3-piece band Lorena B, who performs a mixture of rock and electronic music. The music video for single “Swallow My Gum” was selected for MTV playlisting and was also selected for The BBC Music Video Festival 2011. Lorena B visited London twice over the past two years, in 2011 the band met Jarvis Cocker who then played one of their tracks on his BBC 6 radio show. During the band’s last visit to the UK, in March 2012 to promote a new EP, Lorena B opened a show for Disclosure at XOYO, London (line-up included also Deadboy and Bondax). Ulmansky counts London as one of her favourite places in the world.

Lorena B also performed in the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg 2011, the CMJ Marathon in NYC 2011 and local celebrated festivals in Israel including in-D-negev. During this time, Ulmansky collaborated with Borgore on popular tracks called “Someone Else’s” and “Why Does It Feel”. In 2012, Ulmansky released the first teaser of her solo material; an internet viral to one of her solo tracks “I Always Liked Men With Good Hands”, showcasing her quirky ‘fantasy’ visual style and developed sound.

Today, you can download her debut mix tape Shit Just Got Real. It features a lead track from which A.D.I. is packaged with a retro wedding party concept video, and directed by Vania Heymann. Visuals are a key aspect of her music,

“I think my music and visual style is really inspired by street fashion and anime art. It combines a cynical approach, sophisticated yet trashy. I love the work of the amazing director Kahlil Joseph who released a beautiful video for Flying Lotus a few months ago.”

  • Sound Searching: Elliphant

    Elliphant
    Photo: Alexander Frederic

Often, Elliphant is referred to as the “twisted illegitimate offspring of M.I.A. and Diplo” as she brands a style of music we haven’t quite seen emerge from Sweden. With the likes of Icona Pop being played on major radio stations in America and performing at our finest music award shows, we’re used to hearing a swear word or two in a pop record, but not quite like this. Elliphant has kind of attitude to her. Perhaps, it can be read as the I-give-a-fuck-that-I-don’t-give-a-fuck spirit, which would appropriate her rude gyal sound. According to a magazine article in The Bulletin, Ellinor Olovsdotter was a professional model years before writing her first song.

Slowly, she morphed into Elliphant through the course of a long (and lost) Summer travelling in the United Kingdom with only a Dubstep sound system for the company. After falling in love with the urban music sounds of London she returned home to Stockholm, on Sweden’s East Coast, boasting sizzling emcee skills and some serious lyrical prowess. Watch the bit below. In the beginning, it looks like a print ad campaign, then it turns into a music video:

  • Watch: Marie-Christine’s “Port-au-Prince”

    In unity, anything is possible.

    Marie Christine

Keeping the classic sounds of Haitian music and incorporating what she has learned from American pop and R&B cultures, this Haitian-Canadian singer Marie-Christine is one to watch. What’s to credit? Perhaps, it was her father’s intense love of classical music that prepared her for this path or maybe it was her secret love for pop music. We don’t know but we’re glad she was influenced by some of the greats: Whitney Houston, En Vogue, and Stevie Wonder.
I just loved the sound of the voices,” she says. “Especially the harmonies of En Vogue. I would spend as much time as I could with the radio pressed to my ear.
In search of finding her lover, Marie-Christine finds herself in the birthplace of her parents to seek her one true love. He isn’t elsewhere.

  • Next Up: Fiona Krüger

    Fiona Krüger

I’ve seen it all. Skull chains, necklaces and eye patches…

About a year ago, in the event of scheduled online surfing, an unusually beautiful thing happened to me. I fell in love with Fiona Krüger’s SKULL watch. As frightening as her last name might be to American children born circa 1970-80, somehow, I was sucked into her creative vacuum like a Wes Craven anything.

    SKULL (front view)
    SKULL (side view)

Then, Krüger’s watches weren’t available to the public.

Not being much of a watch-wearer, I credit her pristine craftmanship and delightful design to piquing my original interest. Adding onto that, I really love and enjoy Swiss design. It’s bold and thick contours in clean and simple compositions are signature and unequalled to any design movements on this planet.

    SKULL (front view)

Directly drawing inspiration from the skull watch of Mary Queen of Scots made in the 17th century, Dia de Muertos (a Mexican holiday celebration in which Mexican families pray for and remember their deceased loved ones) and skeleton movements found in today’s luxury watches, Krüger has done a fine job. Priding the superior quality this watch has, it is more so a work of art than a watch, in essence.

    More about the watch

SKULL reinterprets the theme of mortality in horlogerie, and is authentic to the designer’s own life. She lived in Mexico for three years as a child, she’s of Scottish heritage and she has worked and lived in various countries around the world.

Her contemporary timepieces expose the watch’s heartbeat, highlighting the movements and drawing attention to what’s often hidden. Krüger works with skilled artisans to create her watches. The watch is encased in a hand-polished stainless steel skull-shaped case, and the watch is complemented by a handmade leather wrist-band. She’s listed Swiss watchmakers for “the movements” and local Swiss leather craftsmen for the beautiful straps she affixes. This means each element of your watch is made by someone, specifically for you.

    [vimeo url=”http://vimeo.com/75878729″ width=”500″ height=”220″ autoplay=”yes”]

At this present time, Krüger is in the process of producing her first limited edition of the remarkable timepieces. Aptly, only twelve will be available. As a consumer’s guarantee, we can vouch that there’s no timepiece more intricate, human and rarer than the skull watches she will offer to the world. The SKULL watch is 13,200CHF.
