Name: Disclosure Representing: Reigate, Surrey Genre: Deep House / UK Funky For fans of: Flume, SBTRKT, James Blake Single from: “Settle” Produced by: Disclosure Song of the Day: January 15, 2014 Label(s): Moshi Moshi, Transparent, Make Mine, Greco-Roman, PMR, Island, Cherrytree, Interscope
“Help Me Loose My Mind” is all about melody. Beautifully blending the sweet synths along side London Grammar’s angelic voice. Overall, this funky feel-good song is the perfect mix of “cool” and “craftsmanship”. This is why Disclosure is one of the best in the game right now.
Name: Doley Bernays Representing: Bronx, New York Genre: Rap For fans of: Pusha T, Euro League, Denzil Porter Single from: “Just In Case” EP Produced by: MP Williams Song of the Day: January 14, 2014 Label(s): ReeLife
At first, it was difficult to pick between “Blessed” and the first song on Doley Bernay’s project titled Just In Case but after listening to both tracks repeatedly, the reasons below helped me choose “Blessed.”
I have to admit: There’s something a little more special about this bouncy, high energy cut. Though I enjoy the switch in production that happens in “Just In Case ReeLife Sound” featuring Chromatics at 1:13, “Blessed” begins and stays consistent in tempo. Its lyrics were written to perfectly match the rhythm and Bernays authenticated his gangsta rap attitude with referencing his hardcore rap influences where he mentions having “a new Pac flow…”
Above all, I believe the most attractive and ear-catching moments for me were when the use of the word “cunning” occurred — I can’t remember the last time I heard that word in any song — But it doesn’t stop there, Bernays displays his feelings too:

Evan Josloff, Founder of The New Standard Edition, is not your run of the mill fashion designer. This industry veteran has a penchant for style and wants to dress you in an uber cool way, so pay attention to what he believes will spark up your wardrobe. His welcoming, laid-back, hipster-meets-skate culture personality will make you forget he’s been around for some time and you’ll wonder how he defies time with his ageless style. However, it is Josloff’s youthful take on life that transcends into his knack for clothing, combined with his unique eye and take on personal style that allows him to reach a wide customer base. The plus is Josloff’s 20 or more years experience in the industry ensures clientele he knows the market and he’s a serious industry player.

During our initial meeting at the House of Horology he gushed about his “Joggers”, and how men’s fashion has changed so much. He’s looking forward to offering his updated fits to this more adventurous men’s market.
Honestly, Evan’s knowledge of the industry had me intrigued upon arrival, and before I knew it we tuned everyone out and had a lengthy conversation about men’s fashion, the industry, marketing and what tomorrow holds for those of us ready for something new. Our shared respect for quality men’s clothing ensured that we hit it off instantly.

If you are a fabric afficionado, as I am, you will enjoy the hand of his goods and admire the time spent on details, and I assure you none of the time was wasted idly. During the viewing of his samples, I was quite impressed with each piece. The prints were fine and crisp, and the textures defied even the sharpest of images — mostly noted when he introduced me to the “James Skinny Selvage Tiger Camo” a pant with which the tonal print was actually a jacquard stretch fabric. After our chat and the appraisal of his samples, I knew there was more than what met the eye.
Guaranteed to hit stores hard, The New Standard Edition is geared to style savvy male shoppers who like a sharp, yet comfortable fit with cool aesthetics and attention to detail. If this is you, we invite you to get to know the man behind the brand and see why his “effortless cool” is ready to be packaged and shipped to a store near you.
What influenced your venture into the fashion industry?
I’ve always had a very strong passion for style and I’m constantly looking for new ways to keep elevating my own game. I tell friends, (most of them much younger than me), you can walk around in a potato sack and you look fine, but I need more help. Seeing other brands out there and having an appreciation for what they stand for also inspires me everyday.
What is the origin of your brand name The New Standard Edition? What does it represent?
The New Standard Edition is really all about guys helping other guys elevate their own look. You have one piece and you build different looks around it and you’re able to reinvent yourself in a simple, effortless way. It’s about creating your own new standard.
Which part do you enjoy most? The process of creating or the finished product?
I enjoy the process, but I really enjoy watching someone take what we’ve created and building their look around it, how they interpret what we did. Some people love the fabric, some people love the print, some people love the fit or whatever it is – and watching how they interpret what makes sense with that look is the most rewarding.

Who is your target market customer?
The target customer we’re looking at is 18-34. I dress young, but I’m older. This works even for a 40-year-old, because it’s the guy that really wants to look sharp but isn’t necessarily comfortable, because our products have some stretch it’s meant for every guy to feel more comfortable and looking better.
What makes The New Standard Edition different from other brands?
We’re very focused on fit, and on silhouette. Compared to all the brands that are established, I feel that we are smaller and nimble and are able to be more relevant with updated fits. When I look at fits from some of the bigger guys that inspire us, I say that’s great but it could actually be improved, so we’ve tweaked the fits that are out there and made them more current with what’s going on. I feel that in a fashion sense we are providing and delivering quality product, in terms of fabric and details and trying to deliver it at an accessible retail.

What have been some highlights or breakthroughs within the industry since you started?
Well, right now it’s an incredibly exciting time. Since I started, which was you know (over 20 years ago) this moment in time is the most focused I’ve seen the male consumer on fit, and how something looks on them. In prior years, it was just really about brands and they just didn’t understand or feel really as conscious about how an item looked on them. Now, men actually are scrutinizing how the style / fit looks on them, more than focusing on the brand name. Whether they know the brand or not, they’re saying “I look good in this” or “This is a good look for me.” and that makes this the most exciting time in men’s fashion. Bottom line is, the male consumer has a more sophisticated eye and therefore is more conscious of the fit, design and quality, period.
Would you say you are currently satisfied with where you are as a brand? If not, what needs to be done in order to take you to the next level?
I don’t know if I’ll ever be satisfied. I would like to have more exposure and definitely be in more doors but I think for where we are, I think it’s been decent. It’s controlled.
To aspiring designers who might be inspired by this feature, what sort of advice could you give them? Share advice you wish you had when you started.
It’s all about not holding back, and going for it. I strongly feel that I’ve been very hesitant and a bit intimidated without having a complete story, that I was not ready, but I feel that today you need to just get it out there. There are some people with one or two design ideas that are so strong that they literally could be a springboard, but they’re thinking “I don’t know what to do here”, “I don’t have this part of the business” or “I don’t have enough styles”. It’s like if you really have an eye, and you have a couple items that are hot build on them and get out there, because you’ll build momentum and it will start to work for you.
What is your favorite item / piece from the collection?
I really love the Wayne Skinny Sag Selvage Jeans overall. I love the fit. It’s the drop-crotch style that has a very drastic taper from the hip down to the leg opening. A lot of the products out there claim, we do a skinny or we do a straight and there’s not a lot of shape to it. I feel very strongly that we’re delivering more interesting fits in quality fabrics.
What are your thoughts on GrungeCake? Is there anything out there like it?
I think GrungeCake is so on point right now for what is happening. Also, GrungeCake’s genuine passion is so admirable, I think where the market is today whether it’s music, fashion, art or whatever it is exactly what is needed. I see it as a vehicle for all types of artists and smaller startup ventures to be discovered with genuine support. I think it’s incredible.

From The Editor: Histibe, the Ukrainian-based D+B producer whose been featured on some of the web’s most prestigious music outlets, selected us to premiere his new track titled “Aqua Cypher XL” from his upcoming album MILLENNIUM DRUM N BASS set to release December 16.
If it isn’t completely obvious and potent, we are honored and very privileged and honored to be a part of Histibe’s journey, and luckily for Histibe, it doesn’t stop there. It gets better. For this very occasion, he teamed up with Art Director Joe Perez of Kanye West’s DONDA collective to produce the outstanding abstract artwork or packaging, you see above. Not only is the cover minimal in design, it captures the essence of Histibe’s recent production value and the personal message he chooses to share with his fans, this time around. Thank you.
When Mr. Alekseyenko puts his mind to something, you’re in for a wild ride. Known to the world as an eclectic producer slash DJ and Sound Designer creating some of the most diverse yet enjoyable melodies, Histibe is back again with some new tunes. Histibe takes us on a journey to his past on his latest work. Being submerged into the drum and bass culture at a very early age, He teaches us the many variables of the art of bass music.
If you have listened to Histibe’s last album “Take The Form,” he was able to pull you through a musical maze of highs and lows, loud and soft tinkering with everything from pitch to dissonance. We recently sat down with Histibe to catch us up on the new album and what he has been up to these days. December 16 seems so far away to wait on good music, right? Well, here is a little something to hold you over until then, Histibe and GrungeCake have teamed up to bring you an exclusive track release “Aqua Cypher XL.”
Feeling a little drummy or a lot bassy, get ready because here it is, the exclusive premiere of “Aqua Cypher XL”:
You’ve been very busy, releasing new music, getting lots of great press and now, you releasing a new album. Are you excited?
Absolutely, I am excited to release this compilation. It was challenging for me to release 2 albums in a year. The main idea, this time around, was to really show more of my life and emotions. It’s all about self-expression, really. Basically, My Mask’s diary continues to grow with new pages.
What should listeners expect to receive from this album?
I think this question, can best be answered within the statement of my album’s Digital Booklet:
The new millennium has brought some new music to a new generation. This was around 2003. A new wave of Neurofunk & Techstep Drum & Bass. But everybody here called it Drum & Bass or simply DNB. I was 15. There were no good vinyl shops here in Kyiv. I think at that time there was no iTunes even. My friend was getting some CDs from some DJs who was getting them from the abroad. That’s how we share music at the time. Also, I was making rap records at that time and was close to the various music communities in the city, but this is the whole different story. Around 2005, I literally stuck in music production. Virtuoso bass, drums, and all the energy around this. It was the new MILLENNIUM DRUM N BASS for me. I have a lot of memories about that time. Now allow me to pre-open the mask and present you a part of my life story with the help of this tracks.
Would you say the sound of this album is a continuation of “Take The Form,” or is it in its own lane?
For me, “Take The Form” is still a very special album. It’s complex, and you probably couldn’t understand it during your first experience or listen. I believe the songwriting is very rare, and might go over the head of an average person. Symbolism and abstractionism are not for everyone. With this album, MILLENNIUM DRUM N BASS, I want to show tracks with a more dynamic sound. There are stories behind tracks like “Pulsar” and “World Without Clocks.” MILLENNIUM DRUM N BASS is like a small book with heavy, colourful pages that can go into its own lane and be a part of series, at the same time.
In typical Histibe fashion, your album artwork is always a treat! Can you give us a sneak peek or a little info on the artwork for your album?
My cover art, the three singles and digital booklet were all done by Joe Perez. It was a dream for me to work with such an amazing artist. I was a fan of his work since Kanye West’s “Cruel Summer,” but I never had the opportunity to share my music with him. Finally, in 2013 I had the chance. It was a pleasure working with Joe. A lot of enthusiasm, dynamics and ideas. His approach and the result is at a very high level. The works of Joe are like a digital display of my music. This is exactly what I needed for my tracks.
What are your favorite tracks from this album?
Going back in time, “Tears Of A Machine” was released on the legendary Nerve Recordings, “Forgotten Station” was liked by Martijn from Noisia. “So Far,” led me to JAY Z’s Life+Times… So, I want to leave this choice for listeners, for me personally, each track has a meaning.
Well said. What’s next?
I have plans to release new music and videos in 2014, amongst other surprises. The New Mask Movement EP is coming soon, and also, to be launched is a remix contest for the track “So Far” in collaboration with Loopmasters and juno.co.uk. It includes prizes and support for new producers. Stay tuned for the future projects on histibe.com.
It was nice catching up with you, Histibe.
It was a pleasure chatting with you as well. Best wishes from Ukraine!
If it isn’t obvious, we really love red hair and this is no exception. Discovered on the streets of Budapest by an agent from Icon Model Management, we are sure that Farka’s long legs and a short torso were the perfect fit for the industry and his staggering jaw bone and masculine structure are the components that helped him ink the deal. He’s 6’1”, Hungarian and is ready to get to work. Oh, yeah, he looks good in colour photography too. See?
New fashion label BABYGHOST sets a quintessential style for the young, chill and restless.
Designers Qiaoran Huang and Joshua Hupper both come from different backgrounds, being that Qiaoran graduated from Donghua University before studying at Parsons in the States where she interned for Diane von Fürstenberg. The talented duo met while interning for Fürstenberg, as well as Nathan Jenden, and later, founded BABYGHOST in Downtown Manhattan in 2010.
BABYGHOST sets a quintessential style for the young, chill and restless. Each look is compromised with rebellious clean-cuts making it a bit contradicting, but on the reverse, works. The average women-on-the go, such as a design student, who is accustomed to hauling equipment on the regular doesn’t always have the time to hit the pavement in 6’ inch heels and body-con dresses. Some of us prefer to handle our everyday business in pants, tee and maybe a strappy sandal heel just to accentuate our femininity. The fabric chosen screams durability and versatility that could last throughout the years (with proper care of course). Reviewing back to their first SS 2011 collection, the concept has only been congruent with their “Plain Jane” exterior giving essential cloths that could be transformed from day to night. Even playing with the idea of graphics and prints inside some of the looks are to be shown in their Fall 2013 Lookbook. The brand itself has gotten a range of exposure from various published magazine such as ILook, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Milk China.
