O

lawumi, a Maplewood, New Jersey singer-songwriter, doesn’t look or sound like anyone else in the music business. When she was in high school, she played the clarinet. She says that growing up in her hometown was great because of the community. The title of her favourite book is, “How to Be Happy, Dammit: A Cynic’s Guide to Spiritual Happiness” by Karen Salmansohn. According to Olawumi, it is thought-provoking, making you think and consider certain things about yourself. During our discourse, she mentioned “normalizing fucked up shit”. Thus, making us indulge in trauma. Then, somehow, fall in love with it.

Finally, Olawumi keeps it real about unhealthy codependencies — toxic relationships. As complex as they come, the Aquarius couldn’t answer the question about her favourite lyric because she’s moody. She said she would need to select six songs for each mood. The singer-songwriter’s forthcoming project is set to come out this year. Rightfully so, it is called, “MOODY.” Being the first person to ask what inspires me on record, I tried to answer it to the best of my ability. Stream the audio interview now to learn more about the mystical and emotional recording artist.
