lawumi, a Maplewood, New Jersey singer-songwriter, doesn’t look or sound like anyone else in the music business. When she was in high school, she played the clarinet. She says that growing up in her hometown was great because of the community. The title of her favourite book is, “How to Be Happy, Dammit: A Cynic’s Guide to Spiritual Happiness” by Karen Salmansohn. According to Olawumi, it is thought-provoking, making you think and consider certain things about yourself. During our discourse, she mentioned “normalizing fucked up shit”. Thus, making us indulge in trauma. Then, somehow, fall in love with it.
Finally, Olawumi keeps it real about unhealthy codependencies — toxic relationships. As complex as they come, the Aquarius couldn’t answer the question about her favourite lyric because she’s moody.
