Synonymous with his mental health disability, tii adica transcends three various genres to try to convey a message about a rare mental disorder called cyclothymia. I don’t know about you, but to me, he did an ace job at showing how often his mood and mind changes in correlation to the genre/tempo switches. If you’re a fan of Kendrick Lamar, light melodic singing, and Experimental Lo-Fi music, you may thoroughly enjoy ‘The Prestige’.
Motherfolk – Fine With It (Submission)
How smoothly do the words come out of Nathan and Bobby’s mouths? For some people, it is easier to ignore their problems than to deal with them head-on. It’s a lifestyle that’s all too relatable. Here’s ‘Fine With It’, a song about being afraid of the things you haven’t done yet; shying away from the demons of our pasts that don’t leave us alone. It is the second single from Motherfolk’s brand new album called, ‘Family Ghost’ released on the first of the month.
Greyson Chance – Boots (Submission)
‘Boots’ at its core, is a narrative addressing pop culture’s current usage of Western imagery. When I was writing the song, I found myself imagining what Johnny Cash would be like if he were around and making music in 2019. I thought about what he would wear, how he would act, and what he would write about. My conclusion was that it all would look and feel considerably different than these stars wearing cowboy hats these days. Being from Oklahoma, I understand that being ‘Western’ isn’t all about the style, it’s about an attitude, an obsessive loyalty and an unwavering wildness. ‘Boots’ is truly just an observation of what I see in pop culture currently, and what I think about it.
Back in 2010 as a child, Greyson Chance appeared on the Ellen show to perform Lady Gaga’s fun smash hit ‘Paparazzi’. Now, the young boy is all grown up, masterfully-produced, just oozing star quality, and ready to share his evolution as an artist. If that isn’t something to wake you up, I don’t know what will. Back in the day, Greyson Chance followed me on Twitter. He still follows me, and I follow him back. Well done, Mr Chance. You’ve done it! Jools – Hysterical Starving Naked (Submission)
A song with all of the elements it has, ‘Hysterical Starving Naked’ is well-done. Its mix is right; the backing track is not overpowering the vocals. I can hear everything. Not bad for a debut record. Local press has shown its appreciation with the band, printing lines like “The band we didn’t know we needed” and their sound “is [involuntary], along with shaman-like frontman Mitchell Gordon, punch ourselves in the head, so we stay sane.”
To all of my submitters out there, it is okay to be new. However, it isn’t the best idea to sound like you are. The Leicester-based English sextet figured out how to compete with established, big-time musicians by investing time into the quality and construction of the record.
