Music is such a great outlet for people to connect. No matter how the connection is created, it always starts with a familiar feeling. Being a music lover, I must say that music that provides a sense of relatability tends to become my favourite and proves its replay value time and time again. Listening to the melodically entrancing voice of Sophie Meiers on her new single ‘Fade Away’ plainly gives me the same vibe and insinuates her robust talent.

The eighteen-year-old artist from Durango, Colorado has been making music out of her bedroom, but her voice has been reaching the masses. On the Lederrick produced track ‘Fade Away,’ a sombre background is greeted with Sophie’s emotive timbre. The explanation of the lyrics projects itself with Sophie’s relatable mentioning of confinement, aloofness, and trying to get a through a rough patch. Describing how the piece is “a bittersweet confessional about isolation and her relationship with feeling impermanent’, Sophie consummately shows her technique to convey feeling through her music. ‘Not afraid, not afraid, as long as my heart’s still beating I’m okay,’ resonates on the track serving as a piece of optimism. As her YouTube and SoundCloud suggest, she possesses the range to deliver a multifarious sound.

Although this new track categorizes as “gloom wave,” Sophie can touch bases on the sounds of rhythm and blues, electronic, lo-fi, indie, jazz, and more. Aside from her music, the young artist devotes her time generating art through zines and graphic design. In the fall is of this year, the debut EP from the songstress is coming out; as she is currently collaborating with producers Dylan Brady (The Neighbourhood) and Clayjay. Under her alias “guttergirl,” Sophie also plans to release more of a personal EP. The talented artist is currently touring and has upcoming shows in Los Angeles, California.
