Song Premiere: BC Kingdom’s “Hype Williams”

Hype Williams is the motive.

If you are old enough to understand the importance of Hype Williams’ direction and his creative nuances that have carried pop culture visually, you could truly appreciate BC Kingdom’s homage to the Queens-bred director. Hype Williams is known for his outstanding work for Jamie Foxx, Missy Elliott, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West. He is also known for directing “Belly,” a 1998 drama and crime film starring rappers Nas and DMX.

Upon first listen, the Electronic-R&B track prompts immediate comparisons to two chart-topping singles: Michael Jackson’s “Scream” and the Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait (The Whisper Song).” Long away from the days of recording in MIA’s basement, three days ago the Inglewood-fostered duo played at the inaugural launch of Marc Jacobs’s #MUSICMARC concert series.

The R&B / Soul / House-tinged duo, BC Kingdom, decided to share the official online premiere with us at GrungeCake. Stream the brand new record below and be on the lookout for the release of their forthcoming extended play: BuckWildNite. It will be out this Fall. (Autumn, if you’re nasty.)

If you want to know more about what Logan and Zou think about Marc Jacobs and to learn more about their unique brand of R&B, read this Billboard article written by Nicole Saunders.

Two years ago in November, the pair appeared on Solange’s compilation album alongside Petite Noir, Kingdom, Kelela, Iman Omari, Sampha, Jhené Aiko, Cassie and more. According to a press release, “When Solange heard their music, she believed it was fresh and innovative yet reminiscent of yesteryear.” The song is called “Lockup.” A 30-second preview of the track is available on SoundCloud or stream it in full on Apple Music. It is the first track on the album.

Young Thug has also released new music with the names of his ‘idols’ as titles. Perhaps, this can be a thing that continues to happen (more often) in 2016-2017.
