$later 281 dropped his EP, ‘Loading…’, earlier this month. Immediately upon pressing play, I’m enticed by a dark piano riff and hard-hitting drums. The first song, ‘True Story’ sets a Griselda-type atmosphere which lets you know, ain’t shit ain’t sweet. $later details a life of sex, crime and violence on this track and I’m in the front row ready for the mayhem. I almost grabbed my ski mask and hit the door when $later illustrates a situation about a former associate being set-up due to insufficient funds.
The best part about this song is the smooth delivery of it all. There aren’t any crazy, mind-bending bars or intricate rhyme schemes, but that works out for the better. The track is exactly what the title implies, a story. It wasn’t difficult to follow, making it an enjoyable experience that took me back to pre-gentrified Bed-Stuy.
“Never change on my gang or my people/Yeah, I’m stuck with my niggas”
Well, $later, your gang is in good hands because the future is bright and infinite for you, King.
