Alternative duo Phantogram share what influences their sound, working with Big Boi and the importance of connecting visuals to their songs.
Josh grew up listening to The Beatles by way of his father. He would play it in the car. He specifically recalls Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as an early memory of music. Sarah grew up listening to James Brown, Prince, Bruce Springstein and Jackson Browne by way of her parents. Like my own “cool” brother, Josh mentions his older brother being the one who helped him discover some really cool music by some really cool bands.
I think what’s most fascinating for me is that the first Hip-Hop they listened to together was Donuts by J Dilla. When I listened to “When I’m Small” for the first time, I knew J Dilla had to be an influence. He’s definitely present in that song.
