Whether you understand what someone is saying or not, rhythm is always a factor. Body language, too. Olmeca shares the latest single from his new album, ‘Define’ today, which features various LatinX individuals in its video. Representation is important. Sonically, the record travels from Ambient Poetry to Boom Bap to Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Bomba, Huapango Huasteco to Trap, concluding with a horn solo. The outstanding LatinX musician is one to watch, for sure.
Olmeca has also had a presence in documentaries such as ‘PBS Independent Lens’ and ‘Two Americans’, a film about immigration problems in Arizona. He has also written music for hit television shows such including ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘CHANCE’ on HULU and the new series ‘The Mayans’ on FX.
He plays an official showcase at SXSW next week. Hopefully, I’ll be able to catch it.
