A review on ‘Oatworks’

Oatworks, an oatmeal drink with the power of two bowls of oatmeal.

T

he design of the bottle creates an allure; colors combined with curiosity compel that first chug. Oatworks boasts the “Power of Two Bowls of Oatmeal,” combining oats and 100% fruit juice to create a smoothie that is free of artificial flavors, preservatives, colorings, or sweeteners. With processed food being a looming threat to concerned Americans, Oatworks covered their ass ensuring use of every buzzword in the nutritional word bank; it is gluten-free, vegan-friendly, dairy-free, soy-free, non-GMO, and kosher.

When you hear “Oatworks,” naturally “thick,” “clunky,” and “mealy” even come to mind. I was surprised by how fluid it was; its consistency was about that of milk. It definitely passed the first half of my picky eater’s test, texture. Now Test #2, let’s talk taste:

The wonderful people of Oatworks sent us three flavors: Pomegranate Blueberry, Strawberry Banana, and Peach Mango. I tried them with both Editors and we all agreed that the Pomegranate Blueberry was the best. You could taste the tartness of the blueberry with a pomegranate finish. Can you imagine blueberry beating out the juggernauts of the smoothie game? Peach Mango and Strawberry Banana fell short and flat on its standard flavored face. Peach Mango was murky; neither flavor was distinct. The Strawberry Banana tasted syrupy akin to a lighter Trix yogurt. To have two traditional smoothie flavors and not be able to execute shows a disconnect between R&D, user experience and the decision makers; both tasted like baby food.

“Snackfast” is the new emerging category to bullshit you and torpedo its way to a supermarket and / or gourmet deli near you. Oatworks is one of the better products in the market. If I had to choose between a rumbling stomach to compliment the void “How Was Your Weekend?” chatter, McDonald’s oatmeal, or a cool ass chug, best believe I’m going with the Pomegranate Blueberry Oatworks.
