As I walk into Terry Black’s Barbecue in Austin, Texas across from the Colorado River, in the future with cowboy boots on, this Magical Beasts album will play. It will not occur during Austin’s premier music week. Instead, it will be a Texan Winter night—about forty-five degrees.

When the music from each project plays, it sounds like the band is in front of you. The instruments seem to poke out of the usually flattened Americana/Folk soundscapes. Perhaps, it is the style of recording. When it comes to the premises of the works, the topics span personal weaknesses and growth, failure, relationships, and more. The independent album and extended play (‘Peninsula’ and ‘When Love’s A Stranger’) by Magical Beasts, a Chicago-based project led by Nathan Paulus are out May 1. Support the forthcoming release on Indie Gogo now.

Based on my research, some of its members are business owners with businesses in the Logan Square area. I hope I’m welcome to visit whenever Chicago is on my path.

Read more about Magic Beasts

Magical Beasts are a Chicago based project led by Nathan Paulus. They are primarily a recording band, only occasionally doing shows. A few of the core members (Nathan Paulus, Ethan Pikas, and Josh Miller), are each owners of various Logan Square businesses. (Five Point Holistic Health, Cellar Door Provisions, Damn Fine Coffee). For all of the core contributors to the project, music is a strong passion and way of living, but not our means. Some of the support for the albums comes from local professional and touring musicians whom are prominent in the Chicago scene. Magical Beasts wish to make something compelling that has depth for repeated ingestion. More simply put, something natural and wild with some mystical components.
