When it comes to classic albums in Hip-Hop, hands down College Dropout is on my list. Released during my birthday month (February), I was in the sixth grade at the time. This album changed my life completely. When I heard “Never Let Me Down” featuring JAY Z & J. Ivy, it hit home. Sampling Blackjack’s “Maybe It’s The Power of Love”, I knew it was a hit. Yet, the impact of production rebirthed into this anthem. Releasing spiritual / religious truths with pain, knowledge, and heartbreak, a connection was made.
Despite all the sorrows, you realized that without them life wouldn’t be the same. And you would not be the same individual today. “Never Let Me Down” was a blessing to understanding how to overcome not only challenges in the past, but prepare for them in the future. The reality is, challenges will always be present, but it’s up to you to persevere.

Heavily invested in music from an early age, I was familiar with the craft of various artists, directors, songwriters, art directors, and producers. I was not only sold on the music but the overall artistry / brand of each creative. Kanye West stood out to me as someone misunderstood, but ahead of his time. When I saved up money to buy The College Dropout, I was drawn to the design of the album packaging, credits, skits, and most importantly the lyrics.
Then when JAY-Z came in… enough said. Following up, Kanye gives insight on his life and past struggles. As the track highlights honest experiences, American Poet J. Ivy recites a beautiful spoken word piece on life itself and destiny. I will forever be thankful for #8 on this record. Although played many times, I still revisit playing the physical copy.
