Dreamville’s JID releases the video for his track ‘Off Da Zoinkys’. The track comes off with intense production from Christo, and is laced with sharp, witty lyricism from JID. The visual is seemingly simplistic in nature, but gives a very solid interpretation to the song. Prior to the release of the visual, JID advertised the video with a tweet showing a meme based off the 1973 thriller ‘The Long Goodbye’ which starred Elliott Gould. The tweeted image featured a quote saying,
I have two friends in the world. One is a cat. The other is a murderer.
Merging Hip-Hop with movie recreations isn’t new, and with the help of actor, Ansel Elgort, JID is able to effectively match the message of his song with themes from the movie. Throughout the visual, Ansel can be seen feeding into some unhealthy habits, to the point that it seems as if it’s become routine. I think it portrays the song perfectly because JID, in the song is talking to his group of people, urging them to take a little break from the drugs, the lean and feeding their vices, because there are other things that he can do, reaching out to them to let them see how far their journey has taken them from their days on the come up in Atlanta.
