These days, as women, we are emitting a different level of confidence. I admire it. Honestly, I think we should all get checks like Nike.
We are living in a time and space where women are winning more awards, earning high-paying salaries, and being recognised on a global basis. Also, Latin music has travelled to the forefront of pop culture in a way unlike before. For a long time, women (of various walks of life) were afraid or discouraged to request equal pay (or pay at all) for their talents. Thus, it is comforting to hear lead female vocalists demand what they’re worth, so loud and proud.
If you aren’t familiar with the culture, The Bronx is the home of the world’s most influential musical genre: Hip-Hop. Two women of Caribbean descent from the area, who respectively launched their careers within the community, Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B, link up for a high-energy bilingual dance track entitled, ‘Dinero’.
Sounding a lot like the Beyoncé cadence on DJ Khaled’s ‘Top Off’, a record also featuring Future and JAY Z, Jennifer Lopez exudes ‘hood’ attitude on the production. Or if you’re old enough, she’s giving us that ‘Jenny from the block’ behaviour.
To be frank, I think it is one of Cardi B’s best verses of the year. At length, her linguistics sound better; polished and fluent like Sarkodie, she is learning how to effortlessly code-switch. It seems like she is taking the time to pronounce the words she says—bar for bar. Personally, it is exciting.
On Sunday, Jennifer Lopez will perform ‘Dinero’ at the Billboard Music Awards on NBC. We are unsure if Cardi B will be there, as she announced her last appearance until she gives birth to her first child with fiancé, Offset. As the hood usually says when we have a hit on our hands, ‘The Bronx got one’.
Finally, here’s a prediction: Even when the record is no longer infiltrating the radio airwaves, I believe it will continue to get burn in all Spanish-speaking homes. Why? I mean, who doesn’t like to earn money? And moreover, who doesn’t love Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B? Stream the sizzling new track below.
