Listen to Reaching Out, a deeply personal album by the James McGowan Ensemble

Following the success of their fusion album Reaching In in 2023, the James McGowan Ensemble has unveiled its companion album, Reaching Out. This 13-piece jazz/classical ensemble, including Ottawa-based Modasaurus, Quatuor Despax from Quebec, and a stellar horn section, delivers a powerful and nuanced musical experience.

At the heart of Reaching Out is James McGowan, the pianist and composer whose vision drives the ensemble. His compositions are complemented by Alex Moxon’s electric guitar, JP Lapensée’s six-string bass, and Jamie Holmes’ dynamic drumming, creating a robust foundation for the ensemble’s sound. The strings, led by the Despax family with Cendrine and Jean on violins, Maxime and Olivier Philippe-Auguste on violas, and Valérie and Cal McGowan on cellos, add a rich, orchestral layer to the music.

The horn section, featuring Ottawa Jazz Festival Artistic Director Petr Cancura, Mike Tremblay on tenor and soprano saxes, Mark Ferguson on trombone, and JUNO-award winner Ed Lister on trumpet, infuses the album with vibrant, brassy textures. Each member brings their unique voice to the ensemble, enhancing the album’s depth and emotional range.

Adding to the album’s emotive power are the spoken word poems by former Ottawa English Poet Laureate Jamaal Amir Akbari. His performances, particularly in the ‘Imagine’ series, elevate the album, providing a poignant narrative thread through the 17-track journey.

Reaching Out is a deeply personal album that continues the sentiment of Reaching In. Varied and melodic, Reaching Out is raw yet soulful, inviting listeners to find strength and resonance in its music.
