Flashback Friday: “Doo-Wop (That Thing)” by Lauryn Hill

Yo, I have been a fan and supporter of the one and only Lauryn Hill ever since I laid eyes on her beauty, and my ears heard that beauty in her voice in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Then, don’t get me started on her time with The Fugees. She has a voice that I can only imagine compare to angel’s, so I was hella geeked to do a lil piece on her debut (solo) single, which came out in July of ’98. Off the 19 million worldwide selling LP, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the video is pure beauty. Showing a split screen of past; then present. The visuals capture the true emotions of the song and lyrics, in which were written and produced by Miss Lauryn, herself.

Yo, you music makers take heed. Step that game up. Not many artists to this day can claim that. Men and women are so-called aliens.

Bottom line: Is that this song and video, delivers a message predominately about dudes or females chasing that thang of instant gratification, and forgetting that the person that is truly their self — or the person you thought of as an object. Like some new Timb’ boots. That’s my take.

I am not gonna lie. I have been and probably still will be guilty of that very thing. That thing, but watching and listening to this here song and video reminded me of just that. Might have came out in ’98 but it is still relevant in all of our lives today. It also, reminded me of my first roomate in Ypsilanti, Michigan: Tara and my sister, Jenni — and many many other beautiful memories, and gosh dang Lauryn, I say thank you for that. Always have and always will support her amazingness. So haters, keep hating. Gets you where?

Chasing that thing, that thing that…
