Doja Cat – Go To Town (Personal)
I like when sexy is well-done. Who doesn’t talk about sex? Even the cleanest of them all–when inspired—speaks about sexuality in creative ways. It’s all about the packaging. Los Angeles singer-songwriter and producer Doja Cat has perfected it. Watch the video for one of her new tracks titled, ‘Go To Town’. It’s a song about oral sex. Personally, I like the details, nuances, and the parts when Doja Cat raps. I think saying that you’d make a gay guy hetero is ambitious but funny as hell. I love her for it.
Oliver Nelson, Tobtok – 99 Red Balloons featuring River (Personal)
Colours excite me. Balloons, too. Someone submitted ’99 Red Balloons’ to me once, but I cannot remember where or when. It was the audio, then. Anyway, check out the beautiful visual for the infectious EDM track now. There are plenty of balloons to pop—mentally.
Jesse Boykins III – Earth Girls (Personal)
I wanted to write about this video back in February, but life happened. Now, I am making up for lost time. You know, they say that music by classic artists never goes out of style. I like to think of Jesse Boykins III as one of those artists. He supercedes what’s happening now, stays authentic to who he is as an artist. It is commendable. It is rewarding to see him blossom into what he is today.
I doubt it is your first time seeing his name or hearing his music. If it is, worry less. We’ve got you covered. It is a no judgment zone—when it comes to music discovery. Watch the video for ‘Earth Girls’ below. It comes from his album: Bartholomew.
Nicki Minaj – Chun-Li (Personal)
Either filmed before or after her appearance at the basketball game, Nicki Minaj took her smartphone to create a selfie video for her new song ‘Chun-Li’. It’s a different look than her long tresses. However, the Queens-bred rapper still kills it.
M.anifest – Me Ne Woa featuring King Promise (Personal)
Whenever there’s a song that’s able to fulfil your soul, I’m all for it. Within the lines of the well-produced ‘Me Ne Woa’, the Ghanaian rapper details his line of work. When you are in a relationship with someone who doesn’t lead a similar lifestyle, it can be difficult. Most of the time, they may feel like you are lying about your whereabouts. Unfortunately, it isn’t exclusive to males. Ambitious, successful women go through it too.
IAMDDB – Running (Personal)
There’s a British fusion recording artist who goes by the name IAMDDB; the Manchester-native pioneers the Trap/Jazz musical style with her sizzling lyrics and unique approach! When the video for ‘Running’ started, I thought she was Vashtie Kola, but she wasn’t! I hadn’t heard about her or listened to her music before today. I discovered her through the ‘Latest Hip-Hop Videos on Vevo!’ playlist. She is of Angolan-Portuguese descent.
Yemi Alade – Bum Bum (Personal)
If you like to party, you will appreciate ‘Bum Bum’ by Yemi Alade, the twenty-nine-year-old Nigerian Afropop singer-songwriter with a huge fan base. Best known for her explosive track, ‘Johnny’, the latest release is a multilingual Dance track featuring fashion-forward local dancers in the official visual.
Rainer + Grimm – Talk of the Town featuring Plain English (Submission)
When it comes to the music from across the pond, I get weak in my knees. It may be the British accents or the high-quality sound they deliver. Perhaps, it is both. Plus, the fact that most recording artists come from West African families like me. Regardless, ‘Talk of the Town’ is a track for famous (or infamous) individuals. Fusing both worlds to create a unique record that fulfils the dancefloor vultures and the street culture alike, watch the video for the Rainer + Grimm’s ‘Talk of the Town’ featuring Plain English. Depending on what you find funny, it might encourage a laugh.
DJ MOH GREEN – Por Favor featuring Magasco (Submission)
Aerial views of a village, smiling children and dancing adults carry the visual for DJ MOH GREEN’s ‘Por Favor’ featuring Magasco. Check out the visual for the multilingual track below.
Blanche Bailly – BonBon (Personal)
Earlier this month, Cameroonian singer Blanche Bailly released the official video for ‘BonBon’, a song that exposes an untruthful man for his cheating. That wasn’t what pulled me in. It was the line about okra. I thought it was funny. If you speak French, you can sing along. It’s easy to learn. Luckily, the song is catchy, so you don’t have to know French for it to inspire movement. I love how most international performers look as good as the women in North America. They are fashionably on trend or advanced.
Trippie Redd – Deadman’s Wonderland featuring FOREVERANTiPoP (Submission) (Bonus)
Last weekend, he performed alongside SZA at Coachella. Yesterday, he released a new video. Every Trippie Redd music video I’ve watched is well-executed. Therefore, it was a no-brainer to add it to this week’s list. Watch the new video for Ohio-native rapper’s apocalyptic ‘Deadman’s Wonderland’ below featuring FOREVERANTiPoP, a blonde-haired R&B/Soul singer originally from Tallahassee, Florida. You may have never heard of him, but he’s a songwriter signed to Interscope Records.
