Chi-Raq: A Film by Will Robson-Scott

Protein is very proud to present Chi-Raq, a film by London-born photographer / filmmaker Will Robson-Scott. The first in a series of exclusive commissions for Protein TV, Chi Raq is an intimate video portrait of life in South and West Chicago. For the past decade, Chicago has been enduring a violence epidemic, with a death toll in the thousands and casualties mirroring the losses experienced by the US army in Iraq war over the same period.

Allowing its subjects to take centre stage and tell their stories in their own words, Robson-Scott’s film is unflinchingly honest in its depiction of life on the streets of one of the most dangerous cities in America.

Selected images from Chi-Raq will also be featured as the main photo essay in the new, revamped Protein Journal: A global trend report and culture magazine, released quarterly at key stores and locations internationally. Launching September 2013, the subject of this issue is The City, in all its guises. Taking a global look at the individuals driving innovation at all levels and in all areas, the new Protein Journal will be an indispensable source of ideas, information and inspiration.
The violence that’s engulfed Chicago is not limited to the city, the problem is an American problem. Chicago’s issues are so complex, it made me anxious approaching this subject and doing it any sort of justice with the short time I was spending there. I wanted to give an honest portrayal of what life is like in South Chicago. Young men and women are being killed everyday because of where they live. Chi Raq is a sad reality. – Will Robson-Scott, Director
